Nomenclature Wars: Ethnologists and Anthropologists Seeking to Be Scientists, 1840-1910
Scholarly disciplines are ever-changing and continuously debated constellations of intellectual heritage and contemporary issues. This article discusses debates over anthropological nomenclature, anthropometric indices, and museum exhibit design in the development of European and American anthropology from its ethnological beginnings in the 1840s through nineteenth-century evolutionism to the establishment of the Boasian historical particularist …
The co-development of CRM and archaeological ethics, 1974 to 2015
The Committee was an advisory and lobbying group that helped promote and guide federal archaeological salvage programs from ca. 1944 to the 1970s. A key concern of Native Americans has been how their cultural pasts have been interpreted by archaeologists. The program was designed to meet the expressed need by working professionals in Historic Preservation and Cultural Resource Management (CRM), land management, environmental consulting firms, and…

‘VERGIL and the monuments’ has become as popular a rubric for contemporary Vergilian scholarship as ‘Homer and the monuments’ was for an earlier generation of Homerists. Art historians are as varied as literary scholars, as can be seen from the very different ways that a monument like the Ara Pacis has been handled by Jaś Elsner and Karl Galinsky.
Even Better than the Real Thing: A Tale of Two Cities
Words and images seem inevitably to become implicated in a ‘war of signs’ (what Leonardo called a paragone) in which the stakes are things like nature, truth, reality, and the human spirit. Each art, each type of sign or medium, lays claim to certain things that it is best equipped to mediate, and each grounds its claim in a certain characterisation of its ‘self’, its own proper essence.
Epic in the Middle of the Wood: Mise en Abyme in the Nisus and Euryalus Episode
In 1893, Andre Gide introduced a new term into literary studies from heraldry, the mise en abyme: In a work of art, I like to find thus transposed, at the level of the characters, the subject of the work itself. Nothing sheds more light on the work or displays the proportions of the whole work more accurately. Thus, in paintings by Memling or Quentin Metzys, a small dark convex mirror reflects, in its turn, the interior of the room in which the a…

Uses of the Past: Archaeology in the Service of the State
Nation states, or partisans thereof, control and allocate symbolic resources as one means of legitimizing power and authority, and in pursuit of their perceived nationalistic goals and ideologies. A major symbolic resource is the past. In this paper I review three cases in which the past and, in particular, relevant archaeological resources were 'used' for such purposes, and I refer to several other well-known instances. The three cases discussed…
