    Tamgas are an abstract system of signs found in various contexts in the nomadic communities of the Eurasian steppe, introduced in antiquity by the culture associated with the Sarmatians, and in use to the present day. They descend from the practice of animal branding but in use are found in a variety of religious, funerary, and military contexts, complicating attempts to ascertain a singular meaning across their various occurrences.
