  • The Seven Spirits of God

    Open Access•David A Desilva•ARTICLE•Biblical Theology Bulletin…•2025

The “seven spirits” encountered in Revelation (1:4; 3:1; 4:5; 5:6) have most often been identified with the Holy Spirit, the third person of the Trinity. A notable minority of scholars understand them to constitute a high-ranking circle of angelic beings, often akin to the “angels of the Presence” known from other Second Temple period literature. This paper surveys and evaluates arguments in favor of (and against) both positions. It problematizes…

  • Heirs of Phinehas

David A Desilva•CHAPTER•Judea under Greek and Roman Rule•2024

This chapter documents the consolidation of power and establishment of political and economic independence for Judea under John Hyrcanus I and the energetic expansionist policies pursued under his sons, Judah Aristobulus I and Alexander Jannaeus. It examines the rise of sectarian/partisan groups within Judaism, particularly the Pharisees, Sadducees, and Essenes, as well as the roles these groups played in both the stabilization of, and resistance…

  • The Spirit, Sanctification, and Salvation

    David A Desilva•ARTICLE•Bulletin for Biblical Research•2023

This article demonstrates, primarily through a reading of key moments in Paul’s pastoral intervention in the life of his congregations in Galatia, three theses. First, Paul believes that our living justly before God—our embodying righteousness and holiness ever more fully in our dispositions and practices in the hope that we will indeed stand blameless before God—is God’s good purpose for us in Christ, who freed us from the penalty of sin, throug…

  • The Jewish Teachers of Jesus, James, and Jude

    David A Desilva•BOOK•The Jewish teachers of Jesus,…•2012

Jews have sometimes been reluctant to claim Jesus as one of their own; Christians have often been reluctant to acknowledge the degree to which Jesus' message and mission were at home amidst, and shaped by, the Judaism(s) of the Second Temple Period. This book introduces readers to the ancient Jewish writings known as the Apocrypha and Pseudepigrapha and examines their formative impact on the teachings and mission of Jesus and his half-brothers, J…

  • The Strategic Arousal of Emotions in the Apocalypse of John

    Open Access•David A Desilva•ARTICLE•New Testament Studies•2008

Heuristic use of classical rhetorical theorists' discussion of appeals to the emotions allows the interpreter to discern the strategic arousal of three principal pairs of emotions in the seven oracles of Revelation: fear and confidence, friendship and enmity, and shame and emulation. While some of these emotional responses are evoked in multiple oracles, certain ones tend to be more fully nurtured in particular oracles, being more strategic to ac…

  • The Perfection of ‘Love for Offspring’

    Open Access•David A Desilva•ARTICLE•New Testament Studies•2006

A close comparison with Plutarch's De amore prolis and Aristotle's Nicomachean Ethics shows the author of 4 Maccabees to have used common topics from Greek ethical reflection on love for offspring as a means of commending Torah-observance as the means by which one is enabled to secure one's children's eternal well-being, fulfilling the natural goal of love for offspring more completely. The author shows how trust in God's future enables the mothe…

  • The Pattern for Preachers

    Open Access•David A Desilva, Judith R Kelsen et al.•ARTICLE•Anglican and Episcopal history•2006

This is the first reported whole gene deletion in XIAP, the causal gene responsible for XLP2 (X-linked lymphoproliferative Disease 2). XLP2 is a syndrome resulting in VEO-IBD and can increase susceptibility to hemophagocytic lymphohistocytosis (HLH). This identification allowed the patient to be referred for bone marrow transplantation, potentially curative for his disease and critical to prevent the catastrophic sequela of HLH. This illustrates …

  • The Revelation to John

    David A Desilva•ARTICLE•Sociological Analysis•1992

Sociologists of religion and biblical scholars often define the function of apocalpyses and apocalyptic eschatology as a means of comforting the oppressed, a form of otherworldly theodicy in Berger's terminology. Careful scrutiny of the circumstances surrounding the writing and transmission of the Revelation of John leads to another possibility — apocalyptic literature and ideology may serve as a call to action and to protest of the dominant soci…
