Black Husbands' Satisfaction with Their Family Life
This study reports on the degree of satisfaction expressed within a probability sample of 158 Southern black husbands regarding life in their families. The modal response (44.9%) was that their family life was good, but more indicated that it was fair (29. 71o) than responded excellent (18.4%). Most closely associated with family life satisfaction was adjusted family income, followed by health. Education also was significantly related in bivariat…
Marital Status and Life Satisfaction among Black Americans
The relationship between marital status and overall life satisfaction among black Americans is the focus of this study of a probability sample of 373 black women and 253 black men. For women, the married, widowed, and divorced are more satisfied with their lives than are the separated or single. However, when controls for age, social participation, health, adjusted income, and education are introduced, these differences no longer are statisticall…
The Long Struggle
The rehabilitation movement, viewed by some as the best-kept secret in mental health, is finding increasing support and visibility in the troubled aftermath of deinstitutionalization. A new wave of interest in functional performance and skills of daily living has generated more programs, more research, and an expanding body of knowlege. Theory and Practice of Psychiatric Rehabilitation is a welcome and useful addition to the field, both for the s…
Marital Status and Life Satisfaction of Black Men
Although considerable research has addressed the relationship between marital status and perceived well-being, few studies have been of black populations. Particularly neglected has been the study of black men. This research focuses on the relationship between marital status and overall life satisfaction within a probability sample of 253 black men. Married black men are significantly less satisfied than are the unmarried men (including the separ…
Family and Friends
Two particularly important categories of these potential allies of the low-income black family are relatives residing outside the home, and friends. Data presented here regarding these components of the social network were gathered from a probability sample of 111 low-income black women. Unlike most research on low-income black Americans, this study focuses on persons residing outside of Northern metropolitan areas. Contact with family and friend…
Marital Status, Household Structure, and Life Satisfaction of Black Women
Blacks in the United States have developed alternative family forms. Families headed by women are common, and the incorporation of relatives and friends into the household has been viewed as potentially helpful. This paper examines the relationships between marital status, household structure, and life satisfaction in a probability sample of 373 black women. I found that married, widowed, and divorced women had the highest life satisfaction. Sing…
Visual target control of schedule-induced aggression in white king pigeons (columba livia)
Visual target control of schedule-induced attack was studied in domesticated pigeons by exposing them to successive and simultaneous target preference procedures involving a fixed-time food schedule and projected target images. Pigeons preferred attacking an image of a conspecific head over a headless bird regardless of the height of the latter. Images of an intact bird and of a head alone were equally effective in controlling attack and more eff…
