Bringing Home the White House
Refuge Must Be Given
This book traces the remarkable evolution of Eleanor Roosevelt from an occasional user of anti-Semitic language, in keeping with the prejudices of her day, to the foremost non-Jewish advocate of the new state of Israel in the United States. Using previously unmined primary-source material, John F. Sears focuses on Roosevelt's long-standing concern for refugees, young people, and those in need, as illustrated by her work with Clarence E. Pickett, …
Efficient analysis of mammalian polysomes in cells and tissues using Ribo Mega-SEC
We describe Ribo Mega-SEC, a powerful approach for the separation and biochemical analysis of mammalian polysomes and ribosomal subunits using Size Exclusion Chromatography and uHPLC. Using extracts from either cells, or tissues, polysomes can be separated within 15 min from sample injection to fraction collection. Ribo Mega-SEC shows translating ribosomes exist predominantly in polysome complexes in human cell lines and mouse liver tissue. Chang…
Ruby A. Black
This book presents the story of Ruby A. Black, a feminist who broke new ground for women in Washington journalism in the 1920s and 1930s as a correspondent for a Puerto Rican newspaper and the first biographer of Eleanor Roosevelt. It offers access to the secret correspondence that shows how Black used her friendship with Roosevelt to advance the political career of Luis Muñoz Marín, Puerto Rico's first elected governor. The book describes Black’…

Pat Nixon
While widely admired in public opinion polls during Richard M. Nixon's disastrous presidency, Thelma Ryan “Pat” Nixon has often been written off in history as a programmed Barbie doll—“Plastic Pat,” whose pasted-on smile and canned comments brought sneers to the sophisticated. This well-researched biography, part of the Modern First Ladies series, tells the story behind that smile: Pat Nixon's steely determination to stand by a husband who failed…

Recent Directions for the Study of Women's History in American Journalism
This article reviews recent work that deals with the experience of women in American journalism. It concludes that this work points in the direction of a new synthesis telling a more comprehensive story of women and journalism as an alternative to the present narrative that details women's efforts to succeed professionally by conforming to a male model of journalistic performance. To fully arrive at this synthesis, the article contends, a new def…
