Social value of a childhood Qaly - Revealed preferences from pharmaceutical funding decisions in Australia 2005–2023
Several countries now formally include at least one aspect of equity, alongside cost-effectiveness, in health technology assessment (HTA) decisions, often focusing on need. Recent literature suggests public support for prioritising health gains for children over adults. While some agencies may indirectly consider age, none explicitly apply different weights to health gains for children. This study analysed 19 years of data to quantify the additio…

Merchant Masculinity in Early Modern Northern Europe
A range of images and texts circulating in early modern northern Europe implicitly assigned elite merchants vigorous masculinity by crediting them with the ability to control the powerful, if hazardous, market
The Problem of Women’s Agency in Late Medieval and Early Modern Europe
In the last few decades, historians have regularly used the term "agency" to frame their studies of historical actors, probably none more so than historians of late medieval and early modern women. Witness, to cite just a few recent examples, all treating European women from roughly 1300 to 1800

Credit Networks And Political Actors In Thirteenth-Century Ypres
During the second half of the thirteenth century the Flemish city of Ypres, then at its economic apogee, produced a trove of credit agreements between Yprois borrowers on the one hand, and lenders both from Ypres and from much of western Europe on the other. The individual citizens named in the some 5,600 contracts available constitute about a third of the adult male population that would have lived in the city over the majority of the years cove…
Sharon Farmer. The Silk Industries of Medieval Paris: Artisanal Migration, Technical Innovation, and Gendered Experience
Sharon Farmer’s The Silk Industries of Medieval Paris offers a satisfying explanation for the development and structure of the silk industry in Paris during the later thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. The industry was born, Farmer argues, in response to the demand for luxury textiles not only from the French court itself but also from the aristocrats who had established residences in the royal city, from members of the prestigious university c…

Patrick Lantschner. The Logic of Political Conflict in Medieval Cities: Italy and the Southern Low Countries, 1370–1440
Patrick Lantschner’s The Logic of Political Conflict in Medieval Cities: Italy and the Southern Low Countries, 1370–1440 is an impressive study of how politics “worked” in the cities of the southern Low Countries and Italy during the late Middle Ages. It is based on a close study of patterns of conflict in three cities from both of these highly urbanized regions, arranged in north-south pairs to reflect similarities in what Lantschner calls their…

Gender in the Transition to Merchant Capitalism
This essay argues that the slow transition from the commercial economy of the later Middle Ages to early modern merchant capitalism produced significant changes in gender roles and gender meanings for women and men from the middle and upper ranks of cities where commerce had found its most secure home. The changes in gender were filtered, however, through a public/private divide that had taken shape in such cities during the centuries closing the…

Consumer involvement in topic and outcome selection in the development of clinical practice guidelines
Background Consumer involvement in guideline development is advocated, but minimal participation, such as a nominated consumer representative on a guideline working group, can inhibit their decision‐making power and contribution. Little is known about how to involve consumers more effectively in guideline development. Objective To describe a targeted approach for involving consumers actively in guideline development, by focusing on topic and outc…

The Gender of Europe's Commercial Economy, 1200–1700
This essay proposes that between about 1200 and 1700, commerce was rescued from the margins of the European moral economy with the help of a gender binary that took shape among a rising class of European merchant and artisan families. Among this class, a more rigid sexual division of labour was accompanied by a cultural narrative that credited tradesmen with the ability to serve the social whole and charged their wives and daughters with the task…

Fertile Spaces: The Productivity of Urban Space in Northern Europe
Spatial theory—the study of the relationship between material and discursive spatial practices—has great potential for recasting our understanding of urban life in Europe during the late medieval and early modern period, a formative moment in the history of Western urbanity. Urban space—and spaces— acquired powerful, effective valences in this age, producing new social possibilities and new historical actors while simulataneously eliminating othe…

Becoming early modern in the late medieval Low Countries
The history of cities in the Low Countries at the end of Middle Ages is commonly presented as one of discontinuity in which old textile centres collapsed, and were replaced by new centres such as Antwerp, Leiden, Lille and Amsterdam which were in fundamental respects entirely unlike their medieval predecessors. This conventional interpretation is challenged with reference to Ghent and Douai. Neither suffered devastating economic decline, social t…

Women, Production, and Patriarchy in Late Medieval Cities
In Women, Production, and Patriarchy in Late Medieval Cities, Martha C. Howell addresses a problem that has occupied medievalists for the last cen- tury: how to account for women's economic participation and social status at the end of the Middle Ages.Carefully reviewing the work of her predeces- sors, Howell finds no adequate explanation for the process by which women, in great numbers, first entered the labour force and after left it.Demographe…
