Lexical Stress Identification in Cochlear Implant-Simulated Speech by Non-Native Listeners
This study investigates whether a presumed difference in the perceptibility of cues to lexical stress in spectro-temporally degraded simulated cochlear implant (CI) speech affects how listeners weight these cues during a lexical stress identification task, specifically in their non-native language. Previous research suggests that in English, listeners predominantly rely on a reduction in vowel quality as a cue to lexical stress. In Dutch, changes…
A contrastive study on the representation of “Made in China” in Chinese and U.S. newspapers
The label “Made in China” (MIC) is an essential communication tool in the economic rise of China, marking its increasing prominence in international markets with labor-intensive products and also some knowledge-intensive products. This contrastive study adopts a corpus-based critical discourse analysis approach to illustrate how the major English-language newspapers in China and the United States represented MIC between 2006 and 2018. By categori…
Reimagining language
What is language and who or what can be said to have it? In this essay we consider this question in the context of interactions with non-humans, specifically: animals and computers. While perhaps an odd pairing at first glance, here we argue that these domains can offer contrasting perspectives through which we can explore and reimagine language. The interactions between humans and animals, as well as between humans and computers, reveal both the…
Salience is in the brain of the beholder
A recent paper by Boswijk, Loerts & Hilton (Boswijk et al., 2020) in this journal discusses how technological advances allow us to explore the cognitive processing of so-called salient linguistic features, and how this could provide us with quantifiable measures of ‘salience’. The paper concludes that, although promising, the used measure of pupil dilation seems to be limited as a measure for linguistic salience, and therefore refers future resea…
The multilingual workplace realities of Polish truckers
Although international truckers are essential to the European supply chain, we know little about how they deal with their frequent multilingual workplace interactions. This paper examines the effects of participants’ Individual Multilingual Repertoires (Pitzl, Marie-Luise. 2016. World Englishes and creative idioms in English as a lingua franca. World Englishes 35(2). 293–309. https://doi.org/10.1111/weng.12196 ) on their behavior and attitude tow…
What is Salience
A commonly used concept in linguistics is salience. Oftentimes it is used without definition, and the meaning of the concept is repeatedly assumed to be self-explanatory. The definitions that are provided may vary greatly from one operationalization of salience to the next. In order to find out whether it is possible to postulate an overarching working definition of linguistic salience that subsumes usage across linguistic subdomains, we review t…
Verbal art as heuristic for semantic analyses
Aymara is an Amerindian language spoken mainly in Peru and Bolivia. To date, relatively little is documented about Aymara verbal art. Accordingly, we analyze a traditional song recorded in the Peruvian highlands. We provide a musical and linguistic analysis of the non-prosodic poetic song structure. We detail the octosyllabic, homeoteleutonic strategies for line formation, the melodic and rhythmic characteristics, and outline the syntactic, morph…

The Grammatical Expression of Dialogicity in Muylaq' Aymara Narratives
The Aymara oral narratives of the Peruvian village of Muylaque make explicit and implicit reference to the personal knowledge of the narrator, the shared knowledge of the community, and the existence of other narratives. They are, accordingly, considered dialogic (Bakhtin 1981). This article uses excerpts from a variety of narratives to show how dialogicity is indicated grammatically through an analysis of tense and evidentiality as well as argum…
A descriptive analysis of Castellano loanwords into Muylaq' Aymara
