Were Needles Everywhere
BACKGROUND: Community concerns surrounding syringe waste are a common barrier to syringe services program (SSP) implementation. In Kanawha County, West Virginia, community opposition to SSPs resulted in the closure of needs-based SSPs prior to and during an HIV outbreak among persons who inject drugs (PWID). This qualitative analysis examines views of PWID and community partners on syringe waste and disposal associated with needs-based SSPs. METH…

Methodological Guidance Paper
This methodological guidance paper discusses the craft of reviewing qualitative research for a systematic review. Qualitative research is an expansive and wide-ranging domain that includes research from different disciplines, for different purposes, following different methodological traditions, and employing a variety of data collection and analysis methods. Chocolate, Politics and Peace-Building. An Ethnography of the Peace Community of San José de Apartadó, Colombia
S an Jos de Apartad, Antioquia declared itself a "neutral" peace community in 1997, during the Colombian armed conflict between guerrillas, paramilitaries, and security forces, raging in the Urab region. For more than 30 years, the Community has managed to survive as the longest enduring peace community in Colombia, gaining domestic and international recognition. California Dreaming
This compelling book tells the history of the past two decades of efforts to reform mathematics education in California. That history is a contentious one, full of such fervor and heat that participants and observers often refer to the math wars.” Suzanne M. Wilson considers the many perspectives of those involved in math reform, weaving a tapestry of facts, philosophies, conversations, events, and personalities into a vivid narrative. While her …
Innovation and the Evolving System of U.S. Teacher Preparation
A longstanding tradition criticizes education schools for their presumed vapid curriculum, out-of-touch faculty, irrelevance, and suffocating ideology. What is different at present is the enthusiasm for alternatives to university-based teacher preparation, as well as the increasing interest in holding teacher preparation programs accountable. I begin by briefly summarizing the criticisms of traditional university-based teacher preparation. I then…
Professional Development for Science Teachers
The Next Generation Science Standards will require large-scale professional development (PD) for all science teachers. Existing research on effective teacher PD suggests factors that are associated with substantial changes in teacher knowledge and practice, as well as students’ science achievement. But the complexity of the U.S. educational system continues to thwart the search for a straightforward answer to the question of how to support teache…

Cacophony or Embarrassment of Riches
Teacher quality is at the center of today's ardent discussions about the educational system, with calls for the reform and critical review of teacher development programs. There is no lack of activity in response to these calls. There are thousands of teacher education, induction, and professional programs in the U.S. which offer teachers a veritable carnival of options. But these options exist in a (non)system with little coherence or control. I…

Finding a Canon and Core
In this article, the author explores seven "unanswered questions" concerning the preparation of future teacher educator-researchers. She considers five questions concerning the substance of doctoral preparation: what the new generation of teacher-researchers would need to know about teacher education, relevant disciplines, research methodologies, teaching in universities, and K-12 schooling. She then briefly discusses the need to theorize about h…

Who Should Guard the Gates? Evidentiary and Professional Warrants for Claiming Jurisdiction
This article explores empirical and theoretical literature relevant to accreditation of teacher education programs. The lack of substantial research on accreditation makes it impossible to make empirically based claims about the value-added of such processes, including how accreditation processes enhance the professionalization of teacher education. Contemporary scholarship, especially in sociology, also raises questions, especially about the unc…
Teacher Preparation Research
The authors were asked by the Office of Educational Research and Improvement and the U.S. Department of Education to conduct a review of high-quality research on five questions concerning teacher preparation. As part of that assignment, they were asked to develop a set of defensible criteria for including research in the review. In this article, they summarize what the research says about the five questions posed by their funders, and they discus…
Factors for Success in Rural Tourism Development
Since the 1970s, economic restructuring and the farm crisis have reduced rural communities’ economic opportunities. These changes have limited rural communities’ economic development options, making older development strategies less viable and forcing many to look for nontraditional ways to sustain themselves. One of the most popular nontraditional rural development strategies has been tourism and its associated entrepreneurship opportunities bec…

Integrity in Teaching
In this article we examine the relationship between teaching as a knowledge endeavor and teaching as a moral enterprise, using episodes from our own elementary school teaching as sites for our analysis. One episode concerns the teaching of social studies, the second the teaching of mathematics. We first describe the episodes themselves, highlighting the ways in which they shed light on issues of pedagogical content knowledge and reasoning. We the…

Wrinkles in Time and Place
New forms of assessment are sweeping the country. This article reports findings from one of the first projects to develop and field-test performance-based assessments for teachers, Stanford University’s Teacher Assessment Project. The authors analyze the responses of two high school history teachers on three perfomance assessments of teaching: (a) Evaluation of Student Papers , in which teachers read and responded to a set of student essays; (b) …
An Exploration of the Subject Matter Knowledge of Alternate Route Teachers
To explore the mathematics knowledge of teachers in two alternate route programs, the authors analyzed questionnaire and interview data collected at the beginning of the teachers' programs and at the end of their first year of teaching. Most of the teachers could use algorithms correctly, but many had difficulty representing or explaining them. Moreover, although some teachers learned some mathematics from teaching the subject, fundamental mathem…

New Light on the Tolchaco Problem
Data from the surface collection of a large lithic site in the Little Colorado Valley show the site to be a locus of lithic material procurement, possibly used over a long period of time by various groups. The site location and lithic materials indicate it is a Tolchaco manifestation. These findings support the hypothesis that Tolchaco delineates a site type rather than a specific cultural complex or focus

Structural Patterns in the Poetry of Emily Dickinson
T HE QUESTION OF THE PRESENCE or absence of recurrent structural patterns in Emily Dickinson's poetry has never been thoroughly examined by students of her work. Considerable attention has been given to the biographical implications of her subject matter, to her sources of imagery and use of metrics and rhyme, to her wit and satirical intent; and numbers of explications of individual poems have been made in the hope of exposing, in part at least,…
