Sedentarization and Child Health
Objectives This study evaluates differences in the nutritional status of children under 5 years old among the Bodi (Mela) of southwest Ethiopia, in the context of a sedentarization program which involved resettlement of pastoralist families in government‐designed villages (villagization sites). Methods Data were collected in 2013 from two settings: state‐run villagization sites (Hana), where families were forcibly resettled 6–18 months earlier to…
Road to Violence
Among the forms of violence concomitant with the development of large-scale commercial agriculture, road deaths are rarely mentioned. In Ethiopia’s lower Omo valley, many agro-pastoralists have been killed or injured by vehicles since the development of sugar cane plantations, which prompted retaliatory killings, mostly of vehicle-users. Observers have however interpreted these killings as acts of resistance to land alienation. This article unpac…
State-Building in the Ethiopian South-Western Lowlands
Social-ecological change in the Omo-Turkana basin
This paper synthesizes current knowledge on the impacts of the Gibe III dam and associated large-scale commercial farming in the Omo-Turkana Basin, based on an expert elicitation coupled with a scoping review and the collective knowledge of an multidisciplinary network of researchers with active data-collection programs in the Basin. We use social-ecological systems and political ecology frameworks to assess the impacts of these interventions on …
Sacrifice and Stone Platforms in Bodi
"Do Our Bodies Know Their Ways?" Villagization, Food Insecurity, and Ill-Being in Ethiopia's Lower Omo Valley
This article investigates food security and well-being in the context of "development-forced displacement" in Ethiopia. In the lower Omo, a large hydroelectric dam and plantation schemes have forced people to cede communal lands to the state and business speculators, and indigenous communities have been targeted for resettlement in new consolidated villages. The authors carried out a food access survey in new villages and in communities not yet s…
The land does not like them
The inhabitants of the lower Omo Valley, a lowland area of southwestern Ethiopia, are facing rapid and unprecedented changes due to the implementation of a large-scale development project along the Omo River. The Ethiopian government has undertaken the establishment of a sugarcane plantation of massive proportions and plans to make the local agro-pastoralists into out-growers settled in large, government-designed villages. This paper compares the…
