  • Maksim the Greek

    Paul Bushkovitch•ARTICLE•Canadian-American Slavic Studies•2023

Studies in both Russia and Italy over the past sixty-odd years on Maksim Grek (né Michael Trivolis) on his Greek origins and formation, his time spent in Florence, Venice, and Mirandola, his education, personal ties, and work there, and on his original writings and translations while in Muscovy have greatly enriched our knowledge of this central figure in 16th-century Russian religion and culture. Of special note here are evidence of manuscripts …

  • Д. Ю. ГУЗЕВИЧ, И. Д. ГУЗЕВИЧ, Парадигма Герберштейна, или от царя к императору. Пролог ко второму путешествию Петра I

    Paul Bushkovitch•ARTICLE•Cahiers du monde russe•2022

Irina and Dmitri Guzevich have devoted several decades to rewriting the history of Peter the Great’s first trip to Europe in 1697-1698 on the basis of new sources, Russian and western, and an extremely careful rereading of those already known. They have now moved on to his next great journey in 1716-1717. To that end they have begun with an investigation of one of the main preoccupations of the tsar, one that figured in his travels: the assumptio…

  • Patrick Gordon and Peter I, 1690-1698

    Paul Bushkovitch•ARTICLE•Cahiers du monde russe•2022

Patrick Gordon was an almost constant companion of Peter I in the tsar’s first decade of independent rule. Aristocratic contemporaries and later historians have ascribed to him predominant influence on the young Peter. An examination of the full text of Gordon’s diary does not sustain that belief. Gordon certainly had an impact on Peter’s military affairs, and served at Azov and against the musketeer revolt of 1698, but he does not seem to have a…

  • Parties and Factions in the Russian Orthodox Church, 1480–1580

    Paul Bushkovitch•ARTICLE•Russian History•2021

The existence of parties in the Russian Orthodox Church 1480–1580 does not imply parties in the sense of coherent ideological groupings, as Don Ostrowski, David Goldfrank and Charles Halperin correctly argue. Iosif Volotskii and Nil Sorskii had complementary, not rival views. The issue of monastic lands was about regulation, not confiscation, and the parties were actually “old boy networks”. The Russian story needs a Byzantine context for the tre…

  • The Church and Russian Foreign Policy, 1480–1725

    Paul Bushkovitch•ARTICLE•Canadian-American Slavic Studies•2020

Russian historians have traditionally seen the church as merely the handmaiden of the state. Yet in the realm of foreign policy the heads of the Orthodox Church in Russia played a distinct role from the end of the fifteenth century to peter’s time. They were participants in the most important decisions (though not in routine affairs), especially about war and peace. In wartime the metropolitans and bishops produced exhortations to the army. In th…

  • The Trojan War at the Court of Ivan the Terrible

    Paul Bushkovitch•ARTICLE•Russian History•2020

The Illustrated Chronicle Compilation , one of the great projects of Ivan the Terrible’s reign, included a full Russian translation of the History of the Destruction of Troy by the thirteenth century Sicilian judge, Guido delle Colonne. A prose version of a French romance of chivalry, the text fits poorly with our conceptions of sixteenth century Russian culture. Was it history or fiction? Was it secular, or is that term not useful? Partial answe…

  • Sofia Palaiologina in Life and Legend

    Paul Bushkovitch•ARTICLE•Canadian-American Slavic Studies•2018

The marriage of Sofiia Palaiologina and Ivan III of Moscow has been the subject of much speculation about Russia and Byzantium but little analysis of the reality of her role in Russian history. We know very little about her activity as the wife of the grand prince, though that may be because of the character of the chronicle sources. In the relations of Moscow and Lithuania concerning the marriage of her daughter Elena to Grand Prince Alexander h…

  • The Lands of Orthodoxy in The Seventeenth Century

Paul Bushkovitch, Nikolaos Chrissidis et al.•ARTICLE•Cahiers du monde russe•2017

The last thirty or so years have witnessed a dramatic expansion of the study of the history of religion as practiced by the various peoples historically Orthodox. The traditional preoccupation with ecclesiastical structures and the literary analysis of devotional texts no longer monopolize the subject. The history of liturgy, monasticism, and popular devotions has come to occupy the attention of more and more scholars. The recent literature, in a…

    Paul Bushkovitch•ARTICLE•Cahiers du monde russe•2015

In recent years Russian historians have filled in many of the gaping holes in Russian historiography. One of the chronological gaps is the years in the eighteenth century between the death of Peter the Great and the beginning of the reign of Catherine the Great. The decade and a half after Peter’s death is particularly critical because it saw the consolidation of his work and the failure of almost all attempts to revise it. Nikolai Petrukhintsev’…

  • Possevino and the death of tsarevich Ivan Ivanovich

    Paul Bushkovitch•ARTICLE•Russian History•2009

The Romanian writer Nikolae Milescu (Nikolai Gavrilovich Spafarii) was the author of several books designed for the tsar and the Russian court in the 1670's. Working under the patronage of Tsar Aleksei's favorite, Artamon Matveev, Spafarii composed an account of exemplary monarchs from the past called Vasiliologion. He presented ancient and Biblical monarchs as just and wise but also as great conquerors and builders of cities, even when they were…

  • Princes Cherkasskii or Circassian Murzas

  • James Cracraft, The Revolution of Peter the Great

    Paul Bushkovitch•ARTICLE•Cahiers du monde russe•2004

The reign of Peter the Great saw enormous changes in Russian culture and the Russian state, if not in the foundations of society. James Cracraft believes that these changes amount to a revolution in Russian culture. That revolution brought to Russia “Europeanization” which in that time was “equivalent to modernization” (158). The cultural revolution in turn made possible lesser revolutions in other areas of Russian life, for new institutions requ…

  • Peter the Great

    Open Access•Paul Bushkovitch•BOOK•Peter the Great•2001

A narrative of the fifty years of political struggles at the Russian court, 1671–1725. This book shows how Peter the Great was not the all-powerful tsar working alone to reform Russia, but that he colluded with powerful and contentious aristocrats in order to achieve his goals. After the early victory of Peter's boyar supporters in the 1690s, Peter turned against them and tried to rule through favourites - an experiment which ended in the establi…

The merchant is a shadowy if not invisible figure in the accounts of the political and economic life of the Russian state in the sixteenth century. Apart from a few exceptional cases, very little is known of his commercial dealings. His political-administrative activities rarely appear in discussions of the reigns of Ivan the Terrible and his immediate successors. Because few sources survive that permit an investigation of the merchant's place in…

Paul Bushkovitch•BOOK•Religion and society in Russia•1992

This book traces the evolution of religious attitudes in this important transitional period in Russian history. The sixteenth and seventeenth centuries in Russia saw the gradual decline of monastic spirituality, the rise of miracle cults, and ultimately the birth of a more personal and private faith that stressed morality instead of public rituals. The book not only skillfully reconstructs these rapid and fundamental changes in the Russian religi…
