What it means to be a Muslim youth in Canada
Purpose Our thematic analysis of the academic literature on Canadian Muslim Youth aims to identify and describe the factors which contribute to the construction of identity among Muslim youth in Canada and make some research and policy recommendations to address this issue. In this review, we responded to the following questions: What is the current research evidence for Canadian Muslim Youth identity construction? What are the major themes inclu…
Spirituality and Narrative Identity
Since the narrative turn in the social sciences from the 1980s onward, there has been an increasing interest in the concept of narrative identity. The concept of narrative identity, however, is open to multiple interpretations. Here, we take a narrative hermeneutic approach and apply one particular model of narrative identity-to three case studies, exploring how each of these was shaped by the storyworlds of the participants. The case studies hav…
I Am Not Who You Think I Am
While other studies explore the challenges faced by Western Muslim youth, this study focuses on the challenges and development of a meaningful stable Canadian-Muslim identity in an era of global conflicts, collective surveillance, and suspicion. Identity-formation is complex, involving the configuration of many influences—direct and indirect, local and global, personal and impersonal. Sometimes aspects of fluid, and multiple identities conflict a…

Exploring Other-Than-Human Identity
Drawing on in-depth, narrative interviews with 24 self-identified Otherkin, Therianthropes, and Vampires, we explore how members of these communities navigate Bamberg’s three “dilemmatic spaces” or tensions of continuity/change, similarity/difference, and person-to-world/world-to-person fit. With regard to the first, we identify four aetiological narratives (walk-ins, reincarnation, trapped soul, and evolutionary soul), and discuss stories of shi…
New publications in international humanitarian law and on the International Committee of the Red Cross
The Library of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) welcomes researchers interested in international humanitarian law (IHL) and the organization's work throughout the years. Its online catalogue is the gateway to the most recent scholarship on the subject, documents of Diplomatic and International Conferences, all ICRC publications, rare documents published between the founding of the ICRC and the end of the First World War, and a …
Angels of mercy or smiling western invaders? Community’s perception of NGOs in northwest Pakistan
Using a qualitative Delphi method, this study explored how the Pashtun community, living across the border of Afghanistan and Pakistan, perceives the role and significance of non-governmental organizations (NGOs). The study also examined deep-rooted causes of the resistance to NGO-based development and suggested best practice strategies. Analysis of the Delphi finding showed consensus that most NGOs are perceived with deep suspicions and fear amo…
The Self and Spirituality
As humans we make sense of our Selves and our world through narrativization, a process which concerns matters of purpose, truth, and values. This is at one and the same time a spiritual activity as both spirituality and narrative involve a sense of openness and indeterminacy, and the generation of meaning and purpose. As we age, however, physical, mental, and social changes may disrupt how we narrativize our lives resulting in "narrative loss." W…

The African Charter on Human and Peoples' Rights
The African Charter of Human and Peoples' Rights came into force in 1986, and is unique in that it lacks a precedent. However, little scholarship exists analysing it as an operational system in practice. The success of the first edition of this book led to this updated second edition. Contributors include experts who have been actively involved in the implementation of the Charter - commissioners, NGOs and academics. Offering a detailed evaluatio…

Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy
Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy (MSbP) is a form of child abuse in which the abuser, usually the mother, fabricates or induces illness in another, usually a child, in order to present the child to the medical establishment for unnecessary examination. Since 1977, when the term was first used in Britain by Meadow, an extensive literature has evolved around the concept, describing cases, delineating indicators and perpetrators characteristics, and rec…
Implementation through Cooperation? Human Rights Officers and the Military in Kosovo, 1999–2002
In Kosovo during 1999–2002 a large military peacekeeping force (KFOR) and human rights mission (OSCE) appeared to be working towards the same goals. The military and human rights experts had previously worked together during the Kosovo Verification Mission. However, cooperation proved difficult when it came to two critical issues: protection of minorities and the use of arbitrary detention. Human rights officers and the military actually found th…
