Childhood Differences in Healthcare Utilization Between Extremely Preterm Infants and the General Population
Background/Objective(s): Post-discharge clinical needs of extremely preterm (EP) infants are not well defined. The aim of this study is to evaluate healthcare utilization after discharge in infants born EP and compare it to the general pediatric population. Methods: This study involved a post hoc analysis of infants born 24-0/7 to 27-6/7 weeks' gestation enrolled in the Preterm Erythropoietin Neuroprotection (PENUT) Trial who had at least one fol…
High Command
Since it was first published in 1982, High Command had become the standard reference for anyone interested in Australia’s participation in the Second World War, this edition was originally published in 1992. The 50th anniversary of battles such as Singapore, Coral Sea and Kokoda in 1942 re-awakened interest in these milestones in Australia’s struggle for independence. Despite the well-known exploits of Australian servicemen in a score of famous b…
The Long Search for Peace
Volume I of the Official History of Australian Peacekeeping, Humanitarian and Post-Cold War Operations recounts the Australian peacekeeping missions that began between 1947 and 1982, and follows them through to 2006, which is the end point of this series. The operations described in The Long Search for Peace - some long, some short; some successful, some not - represent a long period of learning and experimentation, and were a necessary apprentic…
In from the Cold
Open hostilities in the Korean War ended on the 27th of July 1953. The armistice that was signed at that time remains the poignant symbol of an incomplete conclusion - of a war that retains a distinct possibility of resuming at short notice. So what did Australia contribute to the Korean War from June 1950 to July 1953? What were the Australians doing there? How significant
The Limits of Peacekeeping
The Limits of Peacekeeping highlights the Australian government's peacekeeping efforts in Africa and the Americas from 1992 to 2005. Changing world power structures and increased international cooperation saw a boom in Australia's peacekeeping operations between 1991 and 1995. The initial optimism of this period proved to be misplaced, as the limits of the United Nations and the international community to resolve deep-seated problems became clear…
The Good International Citizen
Volume 3 of the official history of Australian peacekeeping, humanitarian and post-cold war operations explores Australia's involvement in six overseas missions following the end of the Gulf War: Cambodia (1991–99); Western Sahara (1991–94); the former Yugoslavia (1992–2004); Iraq (1991); Maritime Interception Force operations (1991–99); and the contribution to the inspection of weapons of mass destruction facilities in Iraq (1991–99). These miss…

Chronicling The Peacekeepers
Since 1947 Australian peacekeepers have taken part in more than fifty operations in more than two dozen theatres of conflict. In February 2004 the Australian Government authorised the Australian War Memorial to research and write a four-volume Official History of Australian Peacekeeping and Post-Cold War Operations. This will be Australia’s fifth Official History series. Earlier series described Australia’s role in the World Wars, the Korean War,…
Digital futures
In this paper I argue that forecasting presents us with a paradox. Our ability to make reasonable and accurate medium to long term social and technological forecasts is demonstrably dismal. The gap between what actually happens and what was predicted is usually huge. Promoters and technological forecasters continue to provide us with wide varieties of technological futures. The paper introduces a tentative typology of technology futures as a fram…
The Error of Futurism
The aim of this paper is to challenge the assumption that we can insure ourselves against natural and moral evils through improvement in our powers of prediction. I argue that computer ethicists need to take account of the epistemological and logical limits to our knowledge of the future. The supposition that we can accurately predict future events is 'the error of futurism'. At least part of the job of Computer Ethics has been seen to be the nee…
