Inflation Measurement with High-Frequency Data
The availability of large transaction-level datasets, such as retail scanner data, provides a wealth of information on prices and quantities that national statistical institutes can use to produce more accurate and timely measures of inflation. However, there is no universally accepted method for calculating price indexes using such high-frequency data, reflecting a lack of systematic evidence on the performance of different approaches. We use a …
Technology in Mediterranean and European Lands, 600-1600
Histories of technology are sometimes framed as broader narratives of societal progress. Pamela Long’s synthetic book Technology in Mediterranean and European Lands rejects that approach, arguing that technological innovations are best seen through the lens of process rather than progress. The book contributes to a growing body of literature in the history of technology that replaces an older emphasis on linear and teleological stories with an un…
An Immoderate Appetite for Empire: The Multiple Lives of Paolo Morosini's Defence of Venetian Expansion
This contribution looks at two iterations of Paolo Morosini's Letter to Cicco Simonetta (c.1470). The Letter was composed as a direct response to Milanese and papal critiques of Venetian expansion and was first part of a culture of diplomatic letter writing and persuasive rhetoric, intended to have an immediate political effect on hostile foreign views of Venice. Forty years later, Morosini's Letter had a second life as a humanist text when Giova…
Jem Sultan and Venice’s intelligence system: Sorting and deploying information in Venice’s ‘letterocracy’
Like other early modern European states, Venice ruled by correspondence. The letters to and from officials preserved in Venetian and regional archives reflect the structure of the composite state. Just as Venetian rule layered centralized control onto areas of local autonomy, local archives contain series of documents created by governors and captains over centuries of Venetian rule and archived locally, as well as documentation produced by local…

The Importance of Product Reformulation Versus Consumer Choice in Improving Diet Quality
Improving diet quality has been a target of public health policy. Governments have encouraged consumers to make healthier food choices and firms to reformulate food products. Evaluation of such policies has focused on the impact on consumer behaviour; firm behaviour has been less well studied. We show that the recent decline in dietary salt intake in the UK was entirely attributable to product reformulation; consumer switching between products wo…

Shopping Around: How Households Adjusted Food Spending Over the Great Recession
Over the Great Recession, UK households reduced real food expenditure. We show that they were able to maintain the number of calories that they purchased, and the nutritional quality of these calories, by adjusting their shopping behaviour. We document the mechanisms that households used. We motivate our analysis with a model of shopping behaviour in which households adjust shopping effort and the characteristics of their shopping basket in respo…

Exploring Measurement Error Issues in Reporting of Same-Sex Couples
The measurement of household relationships has a long history at the U.S. Census Bureau, but recent challenges include accurately measuring the number of same-sex couples. In 2010, the American Community Survey estimated that there were 593,000 same-sex households. In the same year, the census estimate for the number of same-sex couples was 902,000 (O'Connell and Feliz 2011). Same-sex couples are classified through two questionnaire items: relati…
The Sexual Politics of Empire: Civic Honor and Official Crime outside Renaissance Venice
This article examines a series of cases in which the Venetian state prosecuted officials who had committed “crimes against honor” during their terms in office. These crimes were mostly sexual in nature, and they thus provide a window into the way that the Venetian state perceived individual and collective honor of state, subject, and officeholder. A key part of the self-definition and thus the reputation of the Venetian state was its ability to e…

The Venetian Patriciate in the Mediterranean: Legal Identity and Lineage in Fifteenth-Century Venetian Crete
In late-fourteenth- and early-fifteenth-century Venice, the state increased its scrutiny over the composition of its patriciate. This essay examines the position of the Venetians with a claim to nobility resident on the island of Crete who were in danger of being closed out of the patriciate and the resulting negotiations over social status and political loyalty within the process of prove di nobiltà. These Venetians from the periphery presented …

Work, income, the economy, and married fathers as child-care providers
Previous research on fathers as child-care providers indicates a need to study the father’s role in child care in the context of different economic cycles. Using data from the 1988, 1991, and 1993 panels of the Survey of Income and Program Participation, we examine whether father’ availability and the couple’s economic resources are differentially related to child care by fathers over time. We focus on the differences between 1991—a recession yea…

Assesssing Cohort Birth Expectations Data from the Current Population Survey, 1971–1981
Data from the fertility supplements to the Current Population Survey from 1971 to 1981 indicate that in the aggregate, the lifetime birth expectations of married women 18 to 39 years old in 1971 will closely approximate their completed cohort fertility. During this period, the youngest group of women, 18 to 24 years old, delayed their childbearing; their short-term expectations (1971–76) were not realized, but they made up enough births in the la…

New evidence on the value of birth expectations
Past national surveys regarding birth expectations have usually been restricted to currently married women, a fact which has led demographers to question the usefulness of these data. Because the June 1976 Current Population Survey includes the expectations of all women in a cohort regardless of marital status, it provides the data needed to evaluate biases due to restricted survey universes. At older ages, where there are substantial differences…

Comparative Estimates of Teenage Illegitimacy in the United States, 1940–44 to 1970–74
Incompleteness in the reporting of illegitimate births in the U.S. vital registration system due to the consistent nonparticipation of a number of large States has left data published by the National Center for Health Statistics open to considerable criticism. Utilizing retrospective marriage and fertility data from the June 1978 Current Population Survey, a national probability sample of 54,000 interviewed households, a time series on teenage il…

Sinews of rule: The politics of officeholding in fifteenth‐century Venetian Crete
Crete, a colony of Venice from 1204 to 1669, presented administrative challenges to the Venetian regime, one of the most important being the distribution of offices in the island's government. Venetian patricians, Veneto‐Cretan settlers, and local residents all had a stake in the politics of officeholding, and the Venetian Signoria had to mediate between the interests of officials eager to reap the rewards of office and complaints of the islander…

Perceptions of Byzantium and Its Neighbors (843-1261)
In this book authorities from around the world examine Byzantine art, discussing its guiding principles and the rich variety of its forms and viewing it as an expression of the complexity and intensity of Byzantium's relations to its neighbours. Scholars investigate the production, attribution, and dating of Byzantine artworks and explicate the complex relationship between Byzantine and its indigenous cultures. They conclude that just as the infl…
