A pioneer in peasant studies, Eric Wolf was raised in an Austrian Russian Jewish family. Forced to flee the Nazi German dictatorship, he came to New York in 1940. He was seriously wounded in combat in Italy. He studied anthropology under Ruth Benedict and Julian Steward at Columbia University, obtaining his doctorate (1951) based on fieldwork in Puerto Rico.
