Tobacco advertising, cross-over effects, and US adolescent progression from never to current tobacco use
Among adolescents who were receptive to tobacco advertising but had never used tobacco at baseline, there was significant progression to current and daily tobacco use 6.6 years later. The cross-over advertising effect went beyond the particular advertised product and effectively promoted daily nicotine use, particularly among 12-14-year-old adolescents at baseline, with progression to e-cigarettes. Population increases in adolescent progression t…
Cannabis use and progression to regular tobacco use among United States youth and young adults: Evidence from the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health (Path) study, 2017–2021

Advancing Diversity in Aging and Alzheimer's Disease Research and Clinical Care: Lessons Learned from Educational and Career Trajectories of Recent Mentorship Program Graduates
Underrepresented minorities (URMs) are disproportionately affected with aging-related conditions and have inadequate representation in gerontology and geriatrics professions. The Mentorship for Advancing Undergraduate Research on Aging (MADURA) Program aims to increase inclusion of URMs by improving undergraduate retention and success, increasing rates of graduate/medical school applications, and increasing entry into aging research/clinical empl…
Cigarette smoking decline among US young adults from 2000 to 2019, in relation to state-level cigarette price and tobacco control expenditure
National programmes may have filled a gap in state-level interventions, helping drive down the social acceptability of cigarette smoking among young adults across all states. Additional interventions are needed to assist high-prevalence states to further reduce smoking
Effectiveness of e-cigarettes as aids for smoking cessation: Evidence from the Path Study cohort, 2017–2019
Sales increases in high nicotine e-cigarettes in 2017 did not translate to more smokers using these e-cigarettes to quit smoking. On average, using e-cigarettes for cessation in 2017 did not improve successful quitting or prevent relapse
Availability and Promotion of Cannabidiol (CBD) Products in Online Vape Shops
Vaping products containing cannabidiol (CBD), a cannabis-derived compound used in wellness products and available in all 50 US states, were recently implicated in outbreaks of poisonings. Little is known about the commercial availability of CBD products in vape shops (i.e., stores that sell e-cigarettes). To document the availability and marketing of CBD products in online vape shops, in June 2020, we used the Google Chrome browser without cached…
Correlates of Transitions in Tobacco Product Use by U.S. Adult Tobacco Users between 2013–2014 and 2014–2015: Findings from the Path Study Wave 1 and Wave 2
More than half of adult tobacco users in the United States (U.S.) transitioned in tobacco product use between 2013−2014 and 2014−2015. We examine how characteristics of adult tobacco users in the U.S. relate to transitions in tobacco product use. Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health (PATH) Study data were analyzed from 12,862 adult current tobacco users who participated in Wave 1 (W1, 2013−2014) and Wave 2 (W2, 2014−2015). Three types of t…
Transitions in Tobacco Product Use by U.S. Adults between 2013–2014 and 2014–2015: Findings from the Path Study Wave 1 and Wave 2
In 2013−2014, nearly 28% of adults in the United States (U.S.) were current tobacco users with cigarettes the most common product used and with nearly 40% of tobacco users using two or more tobacco products. We describe overall change in prevalence of tobacco product use and within-person transitions in tobacco product use in the U.S. between 2013−2014 and 2014−2015 for young adults (18−24 years) and older adults (25+ years). Data from Wave 1 (W1…

Tobacco control strategies need to be continually updated to maintain momentum towards a smoke-free society
Associations Between Cigarette Print Advertising and Smoking Initiation Among African Americans
Social Network Characteristics, Social Support, and Cigarette Smoking among Asian/Pacific Islander Young Adults
Cigarette smoking may be one of the factors contributing to the high levels of cancer-related mortality experienced by certain Asian/Pacific Islander (A/PI) subgroups (e.g., Native Hawaiian). Given the collectivist cultural orientation attributed to A/PI groups, social strategies are recommended for substance abuse or smoking cessation treatment among A/PI. However, research examining how social network characteristics and social support relate t…

Biomarkers of Tobacco Smoke Exposure in Racial/Ethnic Groups at High Risk for Lung Cancer
Objectives. We examined biomarkers of tobacco smoke exposure among Native Hawaiians, Filipinos, and Whites, groups that have different lung cancer risk. Methods. We collected survey data and height, weight, saliva, and carbon monoxide (CO) levels from a sample of daily smokers aged 18–35 (n = 179). Mean measures of nicotine, cotinine, cotinine/cigarettes per day ratio, trans 3′ hydroxycotinine, the nicotine metabolite ratio (NMR), and expired CO …
E-Cigarette Use Among Never-Smoking California Students
We determined the extent to which adolescents who have never used tobacco try e-cigarettes. Data on the prevalence and correlates of e-cigarette use among 482 179 California middle and high school students are from the 2013–2014 California Healthy Kids Survey. Overall, 24.4% had ever used e-cigarettes (13.4% have never used tobacco and 11.0% have used tobacco), and 12.9% were current e-cigarette users (5.9% have never used tobacco). Among those w…
National Trends in Smoking Behaviors Among Mexican, Puerto Rican, and Cuban Men and Women in the United States
Objectives. We examined trends in smoking behaviors across 2 periods among Mexicans, Puerto Ricans, and Cubans in the United States. Methods. We analyzed data from the 1992–2007 Tobacco Use Supplements to the Current Population Survey. We constructed 2 data sets (1990s vs 2000s) to compare smoking behaviors between the 2 periods. Results. Significant decreases in ever, current, and heavy smoking were accompanied by increases in light and intermit…
A Nationwide Analysis of US Racial/Ethnic Disparities in Smoking Behaviors, Smoking Cessation, and Cessation-Related Factors
Objectives. We used nationally representative data to examine racial/ethnic disparities in smoking behaviors, smoking cessation, and factors associated with cessation among US adults. Methods. We analyzed data on adults aged 20 to 64 years from the 2003 Tobacco Use Supplement to the Current Population Survey, and we examined associations by fitting adjusted logistic regression models to the data. Results. Compared with non-Hispanic Whites, smalle…
Religiosity and Utilization of Complementary and Alternative Medicine Among Foreign-Born Hispanics in the United States
The purpose of this study was to test the association between religiosity and utilization of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) in a sample of foreign-born Hispanic adults, even when excluding prayer as a form of CAM. Data were collected using a self-report Spanish-language survey. Study participants consisted of 306 respondents between the ages of 18 and 79. Most were born in Mexico (56.3%), followed by South America (24.6%), and then …
Smoking Cessation Rates in the United States: A Comparison of Young Adult and Older Smokers
Objectives. We compared smoking quit rates by age in a nationally representative sample to determine differences in cessation rates among younger and older adults. Methods. We used data on recent dependent smokers aged 18 to 64 years from the 2003 Tobacco Use Supplement to the Current Population Survey (n=31625). Results. Young adults (aged 18–24 years) were more likely than were older adults (aged 35–64 years) to report having seriously tried to…
The California Tobacco Control Program’s effect on adult smokers: (3) Similar effects for African Americans across states
There were uniformly large declines in AA smoking from 1992-3 to 2001-2 across states, independent of type of tobacco control strategy. Further research is needed into factors associated with smoking declines among AAs
The California Tobacco Control Program’s effect on adult smokers: (1) Smoking cessation
Successful smoking cessation increased by 25% during the 1990s in the US. Comprehensive tobacco-control programmes were associated with greater cessation success than were with high cigarette prices alone, although both effects were limited to younger adults
The California Tobacco Control Program’s effect on adult smokers: (2) Daily cigarette consumption levels
The California Tobacco Control Program was associated with significant declines in cigarette consumption among daily smokers aged > or = 35 years of age, which in turn should lead to declines in tobacco-related health effects. The decline in consumption among young adult smokers was a national trend
Acculturation as a Risk Factor for Smoking Among Asian American Adolescents: Is the Association Confounded by Nationality?
Background. Acculturation to the United States is associated with tobacco use among Asian American adolescents. Previous studies have not controlled for the possible confounding effects of national origin. Methods. This study analyzed data from statewide surveys of 2093 Asian-American 10th grade California adolescents. Logistic regression analyses evaluated the independent effects of nationality and acculturation on past-month smoking. Results. C…
