Introduction to the Special Issue “The rural-urban divide in Europe: Assessing its impact on political attitudes and voting behavior”
The 2023 Spanish general elections and the fourth Sánchez cabinet: A successful gamble for the left
Voting for trade protectionist parties: Evidence from nine waves of the European Social Survey
This article empirically investigates the impact of globalization on voting behavior. Specifically, combining individual-level data from the first nine waves of the European Social Survey, party-level information from the Comparative Manifesto Project, and country-level data from Eurostat, we study the individual determinants of the vote for trade protectionist parties. Our findings show, firstly, that protectionist parties mainly receive elector…
Why do majoritarian systems benefit the right? Income groups and vote choice across different electoral systems
This research note investigates how the voting behavior of middle-income citizens explains why right-wing parties tend to govern under majoritarian electoral rule. The growing literature that investigates the ideological effects of electoral systems has mostly focused on institutional explanations. However, whether the electoral rules overrepresent parties with some specific ideologies is also a matter of behavior. Building on Iversen and Soskice…
Why do majoritarian systems benefit the right? Income groups and vote choice across different electoral systems – Erratum
The nationalisation of subnational elections in polarised Spain: The May 2023 regional and local elections
This article examines the May 2023 regional and local elections in Spain. The vote confirmed the territorial retrenchment of the left-leaning national government coalition members (PSOE and UP) and sparked a call for snap general elections. The outcome of these sub-national elections was notably shaped by the divergent trajectories of the newer parties (Cs, UP, and Vox), as well as by the considerable increase in the support of the main oppositio…
Overlapping polarization: On the contextual determinants of the interplay between ideological and affective polarization
The strategic determinants of legislative malapportionment in new democracies
Territorial Polarisation after Radical Parties’ Breakthrough in Spain
Radical parties are on the rise in Europe. However, there is scant evidence on whether their breakthroughs affect voters' political attitudes, particularly with regard to non-economic dimensions of electoral competition. We address these gaps using a combination of panel surveys developed during recent general election cycles (2011, 2015 and 2019) in Spain. We show that the breakthrough of Podemos and Vox in 2015 and 2019 respectively contributed…
Cordons sanitaires or tainted coalitions? The electoral consequences of populist participation in government
An increasing literature has studied the recent growth of populist parties and the determinants of their electoral success. This article contributes to this body by addressing the question of whether cordon sanitaires or tainted coalitions are more effective at hindering the electoral success of populist parties. Building on the populist parties and cost of governing literatures, we hypothesize that populist parties suffer considerable loses at t…
Electoral systems and ideological voting
Electoral systems affect vote choice. While a vast literature studies this relationship by examining aggregate-level patterns and focussing on the interparty dimension of electoral rules, the convenience of analyzing this phenomenon by emphasizing the role played by the incentives to cultivate a personal vote generated by the system and matching voters with the party they vote for has been traditionally overlooked. In this article, we offer new e…
Voting after the change: A natural experiment on the effect of electoral reform on party system fragmentation
This article analyses the causal effect of the 1993 electoral reform in New Zealand on party system fragmentation using the ‘synthetic’ control method. Previous studies using cross-national evidence suggest that electoral reforms change the number of parties. However, they do not take into account possible endogeneity problems and usually focus on their short-term effects. Since the electoral system in use in this country before the change was fi…
The Politics of Committee Chairs Assignment in Ireland and Spain
Committee chairs are key positions in legislatures. Their holders are vested with important formal and informal powers. In this article, we make a comparative appraisal of the politics of committee chair assignment in Ireland and Spain. Using an original dataset that covers the past two decades in both countries, we make a twofold contribution. Based on Cox and McCubbins's partisan theory of US Congress, we first develop a framework for parliamen…
The Impact of Intraparty Electoral Reforms on Party System Nationalization
Abundant research demonstrates that electoral rules have an impact on party system fragmentation. Building on these findings, and adopting a dynamic approach, this article investigates the effect of changes of the ballot structure on party system nationalization and shows that this effect is conditioned by levels of ethno-geographic concentration and political decentralization. Specifically, candidate-centered reforms hamper party system national…
The effect of valence and ideology in campaign conversion: Panel evidence from three Spanish general elections
Do European Parliament Elections Impact National Party System Fragmentation
Why have European large parties lost electoral ground in recent decades? Whereas most explanations draw on theories of dealignment, this article advances a novel, institutional, argument by focusing on the introduction of direct elections to the European Parliament (EP) in 1979. Archetypes of second-order elections, EP elections are characterized by lower vote shares for (a) large and (b) incumbent parties. Bridging the second-order elections the…
Determinants of legislative committee membership in proportional representation systems
This article explores the determinants of the allocation of parliamentary posts to specific legislators. Using an original data set of biographical information and committee assignments for almost 10,000 legislators in five non-presidential democracies (i.e. Finland, Luxembourg, Norway, Portugal, and Spain), we provide evidence that distributive posts are more likely to be allocated to electorally vulnerable members of parliament, mainly under ca…

Tracing the electorate of the MoVimento Cinque Stelle: An Ecological Inference Analysis
The 2013 Italian parliamentary election was characterized by the outstanding performance of the MoVimento Cinque Stelle, which in its first participation in a general election obtained a remarkable 25% of the national vote. Where did these votes come from? Furthermore, is it possible to observe different electoral dynamics across geographical areas of Italy? In order to address these questions, we first estimate the flow of votes between the 2008…
Allocating Campaign Effort in Spain: Evidence from Four General Elections
This paper analyses which districts are targeted by Spanish political parties in their electoral campaigns. We find that the major Spanish parties - PP and PSOE - mobilise districts where they are more likely to win a new seat or are in danger of losing one they already hold. The predicted closeness of the district race is more relevant in the smallest districts. We also find that Spanish parties mobilise their strongholds. We suggest that, apart…
Breaking the cartel: The geography of the electoral support of new parties in Italy and Spain
The factors explaining the emergence and electoral success of new parties have been investigated extensively on a cross-national basis, but little is known about why their vote shares differ within a specific country at any given time. This article is an attempt to fill this gap by examining the determinants of electoral support of Podemos and Movimento 5 Stelle across Spanish and Italian municipalities. Using empirical evidence from the 2014 Eur…
The international diffusion of electoral systems: The spread of mechanisms tempering proportional representation across E urope
There is an assumption in much of the electoral engineering literature that domestic episodes of electoral system choice occur in a vacuum, isolated from international influences. Yet this assumption remains largely untested, despite the comparative focus of much of that literature. This article focuses on part of this gap by considering two electoral mechanisms that seek to limit party system fragmentation under proportional representation – low…
Staying in the First League: Parliamentary Representation and the Electoral Success of Small Parties
Why are some small parties successful whereas others wither away? Despite the voluminous literature on parties and party families, we have a limited understanding of what explains small party success. Most studies tend to emphasize the role of social cleavages and electoral systems. Instead, we propose a new institutional explanation that treats entering parliament as a key resource for small parties. Parliamentary entrance signals organizational…
Electoral coordination in mixed‐member systems: Does the level of democratic experience matter
A number of institutional and non‐institutional factors hamper electoral coordination and, hence, increase party system fragmentation in the nominal tier of mixed electoral systems. Contrary to expectations, the number of electoral parties is not lower in all old democracies. Nevertheless, the level of democratic experience modifies the effect of other variables like the type of mixed electoral system or the closeness of the races. Econometric te…

Economy, Type of Government, and Strategic Timing of Elections: Calling Opportunistic Early Elections in OECD Democracies
Although mainstream models of accountability assume that the election date is exogenously fixed, in almost any parliamentary democracy governments may choose it. This article proposes a theory of the strategic timing of elections that highlights the role of the economy and the type of government. First, incumbents will call early elections when the economy is growing and inflation rates are low. Nevertheless, coalition and majority governments wi…

Voting differently across electoral arenas: Empirical implications from a decentralized democracy
This article assesses the validity of several alternative hypotheses explaining dual voting across electoral arenas in a decentralized polity. Based on data from three different electoral cycles in Catalonia, I find evidence that the evaluation of the regional candidates of the two main parties has the largest, most consistent impact on vote transfers between levels of government. Results also emphasize, although to a lesser extent, the role play…

Aquellos ciudadanos…
