  • Embodiment in modal meaning construction: The ecology of Finnish verbs of ability from a force-dynamic perspective

Open Access•Rea Peltola, Arnaud Godet•ARTICLE•Nordic Journal of Linguistics•2026

This paper deals with seven Finnish verbs of ability that all combine modal meaning with a specific lexical component that determines in terms of what the subject referent is able to do something, e.g. tolerance, energy, sensitivity: sietää , suvaita , tarjeta , jaksaa , tohtia , malttaa , raaskia. Through corpus-based research, the paper first provides a grammatical description for each verb, focusing on complementation, person marking, and nega…

  • La construction réduplicative finnoise V1 kuin V1=kin: Une ressource modale et discursive

    Open Access•Outi Duvallon, Rea Peltola•ARTICLE•Études finno-ougriennes•2025

Cet article étudie les valeurs modales et discursives de la réduplication verbale corrélative en finnois, V1 kuin V1=kin. L’objectif est de montrer, dans un premier temps, ce qui motive cette construction du point de vue de sa forme et de retracer l’émergence de son sens modal (« p est le cas malgré la possibilité de non-p »). Pour ce faire, le patron V1 kuin V1=kin est examiné au sein d’un réseau de constructions avec lesquelles il partage au mo…

  • Interspecies Identification in Nature Observations: Modal Expressions and Open Reference Constructions with Non-Human Animate Reference in Finnish

    Open Access•Rea Peltola•ARTICLE•Open Linguistics•2018

This paper deals with the intermediate position of non-human animates on semantic prominence scales and illustrates the complexity and the context-driven aspect of linguistic animacy. The focus is on deontic and dynamic modals, as well as the zero person and passive constructions, in Finnish. These types of structures have been described as reserved for human reference. The corpus of this study is collected from a radio program where listeners ca…

  • Being perceptible: Animacy, existentiality and intersubjectivity in constructions with the Finnish verb kuulua ‘to be perceptible (through hearing)’

    Open Access•Rea Peltola•ARTICLE•Nordic Journal of Linguistics•2018

This paper deals with the grammatical differences and overlaps between the uses of the Finnish kuulua as a verb of auditory perceptibility (‘to be audible’) and as a verb of appearance, when employed in negative clauses (‘to be imperceptible (through unspecified sensory input)’). Both meanings entail perceptibility, existentiality and motion from the experienced towards the experiencer. However, they differ significantly in regard to the nature o…

  • Restriction et renforcement: Le MD vaa(n) (finnois) comparé à bara (suédois) et seulement (français)

    Outi Duvallon, Rea Peltola•ARTICLE•Langages•2017

Cet article propose une analyse comparée de trois unités singulières, vaa(n) en finnois, bara en suédois et seulement en français. L’objectif est de s’interroger sur l’identité sémantique de ces éléments et leur mode de fonctionnement en tant que marqueurs discursifs (MD). L’étude se concentre sur trois contextes discursifs : les énoncés impératifs, les énoncés réorientant le discours et les énoncés exprimant les points saillants du récit. Chacun…

  • Permission and obligation intertwined: The twofold modal meaning of the Finnish jussive from a discourse perspective

    Open Access•Rea Peltola•ARTICLE•Linguistics•2016•Cited by: 1

This article examines the representation of semantic vagueness in discourse as well as the connection between deontic modal meaning and third person reference through the semantics and uses of the Finnish jussive mood. The data used in the analysis come from a collection of newspaper texts and a corpus of dialectal speech. Analyzing jussive forms that give rise to various modal readings, I argue that the two poles of the deontic axis, permission …

  • Prises de distance en finnois: Le mode jussif et le marqueur discursif –hAn

    Outi Duvallon, Rea Peltola•ARTICLE•Linx•2012

Cet article examine deux formes finnoises, le mode jussif en ‐kOOn et le marqueur discursif ‐hAn, qui produisent des effets de sens similaires dans des contextes concessifs. La première partie de l’article analyse les propriétés sémantiques de ces formes afin de définir un procédé de distanciation qui est mis à l’œuvre. Il s’agit de deux mécanismes différents, l’un ayant trait à l’actualisation du procès, l’autre à la détermination de l’origo éno…
