  • Elite-led development and Mexico’s independent coffee organisations in the wake of the rust epidemic

    Thomas Paul Henderson•ARTICLE•Third World Quarterly•2020•Cited by: 2•References: 27

Between 2012 and 2016 a virulent strain of coffee rust reduced Mexican yields by more than 50%, and it is still devastating production. The government has responded by replacing traditional arabica plants vulnerable to the pathogen with resistant, high-yielding varieties to recover the sector and encourage long-term adaptation to a disease that cannot be eradicated. However, this contribution will attempt to show that the intractable nature of th…

  • La roya y el futuro del café en Chiapas

    Open Access•Thomas Paul Henderson•ARTICLE•Revista Mexicana de Sociología•2019•Cited by: 2

  • Struggles for autonomyfromandwithinthe market of southeast Mexico's small coffee producers

Thomas Paul Henderson•ARTICLE•The Journal of Peasant Studies•2019•Cited by: 15•References: 35

This contribution examines the historically shifting reproduction strategies of southeast Mexico's small coffee producers through the lens of autonomy. It argues that producers attempt to create and occupy spaces of relative autonomy from commodity and labour markets while also struggling to exert a degree of control over their commodity market integration - termed here 'autonomy within the market'. Recent developments in Mexico's coffee sector -…

  • The Class Dynamics of Food Sovereignty in Mexico and Ecuador

    Open Access•Thomas Paul Henderson•ARTICLE•Journal of Agrarian Change•2018•Cited by: 14•References: 27

This paper examines the class dynamics of food sovereignty in Mexico and Ecuador. It argues that the nature of contemporary demands for food sovereignty is heavily influenced by the outcomes of peasant movements' historical and ongoing internal class dynamics. Processes of class differentiation within peasant organizations in both countries have led to the interests of certain classes predominating over or at the expense of others. Despite La Vía…

  • State-peasant movement relations and the politics of food sovereignty in Mexico and Ecuador

Thomas Paul Henderson•ARTICLE•The Journal of Peasant Studies•2017•Cited by: 32•References: 31

This contribution argues that the articulation between the state and peasant organizations' internal structures - the class characteristics of their mass bases, their leaderships and the modes of interaction between the two - is critical for determining the nature of contemporary struggles guided by the discourse of food sovereignty. It will show that that counter-hegemonic demands are not synonymous with counter-hegemonic practice; rather than s…
