  • A Comparative Analysis of South Africa as a Semi-Industrialised Developing Country

    Open Access•J B Knight, John Knight•ARTICLE•The Journal of Modern African…•1988•Cited by: 2•References: 2

South Africa has neither a developed nor a typical underdeveloped economy. Too often it has been wrongly classified, along with, say, Australia and New Zealand, as one of the peripheral developed countries, because only a part of the economy and population have the characteristics we associate with that group. Yet its economy is distinctly different from others in sub-Saharan Africa. South Africa falls squarely into the category which the World B…

  • Labor market discrimination in a poor urban economy

J B Knight, John Knight et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Development Studies•1982

Labor market discrimination by sex and by race in a poor urban economy is analyzed using a survey of manufacturing employees in Tanzania. There are large differences in mean wages by both sex and race. Using techniques previously applied to developed countries, it is found that, whereas the sex difference in mean wages can be explained mainly in terms of sex differences in personal characteristics, the race difference is mainly the result of wage…

  • Economics: The State of Play1

    J B Knight•ARTICLE•Social Dynamics•1977•References: 2

The paper examines methodology and research priorities. It considers whether economists are asking the wrong questions and whether they are producing inadequate answers to questions. It examines the nature of imbalance in economists’ efforts ‐ drawing on e.g. the economics of racial discrimination, growth and distribution ‐ and the reasons for this imbalance. It concludes with an appeal for a wider approach to a topic or problem than most individ…
