Sacred Art Music in the Catholic Liturgy
Through the theme of ‘annunciations’, this volume interrogates how, when, why, through and to whom God communicates in the Old and New Testaments. In doing so, it tackles the intimate relationship between Scriptural reflection and musical practice in the past, its present condition, and what the future might hold.
James MacMillan's Mass of Blessed John Henry Newman and the Culture of Liturgical Music-Making in the Scottish Catholic Church
James MacMillan composed his Mass of Blessed John Henry Newman as a congregational setting for the visit of Pope Benedict XVI to the United Kingdom in 2010. The work was heralded as the first setting of the new English Missal translation, and MacMillan expressed hope that it would make a longer-term contribution to music-making in the Roman Catholic Anglosphere. However, in Scotland at least, Mass of Blessed John Henry Newman has not made a wides…

Mentoring as a Strategy for Welfare Reform
Mentoring has most often been used as a tool to assist children in developing their potential or as a means for professionals to advance in the workplace. Mentoring is also gaining in popularity as a component of welfare reform. The focus of the survey research reported in this article is a mentoring program designed to help women avoid or leave the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families program. The mentoring program, operated by a faith-based …
Beyond Welfare or Work
There is probably no aspect of the work versus welfare debate that is more contested than the effects of welfare use on child development outcomes. Liberals tend to emphasize the detrimental effects of poverty and welfare stigma on children, while conservatives cite the negative socialization that occurs regarding the value of work within welfare dependent families. However, large scale longitudinal studies that have been used to address this que…
The Urban Ecology of Hospital Failure
Hospital closures occurred nationally with increasing frequency between 1970 and 1990. In particular, large urban areas experienced a dramatic number of closures. Of the 61 general hospitals operating in Chicago in 1970, 22 (36%) had closed by 1991. While a growing body of literature has examined the etiology and determinants of hospital closure over the last two decades, few empirical studies have focused on the neighborhood correlates of closur…
Fixation and Regression in the Psychoanalytic Theory of Homosexuality
This essay evaluates the notions of fixation and regression in the psychoanalytic theoretical conceptualization of homosexuality. Charles Socarides has had a central role in formulating the most prominent and influential psychoanalytic metapsychological understanding of homosexuality in recent years and for that reason this essay focuses principally on him. The concepts of fixation and regression are central to his understanding and I argue that …
