When the tomb of Cangrande della Scala (d. 1329), ruler of Verona, was opened in 1921, it was found to contain an array of silks from Central Asia. A considerable amount of work has been published recently which seeks to document the history of the presence of people of South Asian and Caribbean origin in Britain. This welcome addition to the literature is marred only by the almost total silence about the Scottish dimension of this history.
