Gender differences in risk depend on the relational contexts in which risk behaviors occur. The fact that female and male risk behavior often occurs in different relational contexts suggests that different kinds of prevention interventions which are sensitive to these contexts may be necessary

Rapid assessment proved invaluable in paving the way for the survey. Central coordination of data collection is crucial. While fully standardized methods may be a research ideal, local circumstances may require substantial adaptation of the methods to achieve meaningful local representation. Allowance for understanding of local context may increase rather than decrease the generalizability of the data

Sexual behaviour of injecting drug users and associated risks of HIV infection for Non-injecting sexual partners
The sexual behaviour of 142 clients of syringe-exchange schemes was measured using a questionnaire interview based survey method. Two to four months later the questionnaire was repeated to provide measures of behavioural change. The majority of these clients were sexually active, 77% having one or more sexual partners in the 3 months prior to the first interview. Drug Injecting and Syringe Sharing in Custody and in the Community
In an exploratory study of HIV risk behaviour and custodial experiences, 183 injecting drug users were interviewed in twelve cities in England, Scotland and Wales. Custodial experience was common (79% in custody at some time), recent (58% in custody since 1987), and sentences were short (for 64% the most recent period of custody lasted one month or less). This paper reports on the British findings from a cross-national study of HIV prevalence and HIV risk behaviour among 1,037 injecting drug users (IDUs) recruited from a variety of treatment- and community-based settings during 1990. To describe forms of unsafe protected sex (vaginal or anal intercourse where condoms are used unsafely) among a sample of drug users in London, data are drawn from a qualitative study of the sexual and drug taking lifestyles of opioid and stimulant users.
