Gender stereotypes and children’s performance in primary schools
This paper investigates the impact of exposure to teacher stereotypes on student achievement in primary schools. We measure both implicit and explicit stereotypes using item-based questions available in the European Value Survey and the Gender-Science Implicit Association Test. By exploiting the random assignment of students to teachers with different levels of stereotypes, we show that the gender gap in math performance, defined as the differenc…
Study strategies during emergency-related distance learning. The role of gender and field of study
We study the impact of distance learning on students’ exam choices and achievement in higher education, pointing to the mediating role of the field of study and gender. Identification relies on the exogenous shift from in-person to online teaching during the second semester of the 2019–2020 academic year in Italy due to the sudden outbreak of COVID-19. We estimate Difference-in-Differences models using administrative data for different cohorts of…

Where Women Make a Difference
The authors study the effect of corporate board gender quotas on firm performance in France, Italy, and Spain. The identification strategy exploits the exogenous variation in mandated gender quotas within country and over time and uses a counterfactual methodology. Using firm-level accounting data and a difference-in-difference estimator, the authors find that gender quotas had either a negative or an insignificant effect on firm performance in t…

Performance-Related Pay and Firm Productivity
The authors investigate the causal effect on firm productivity of a switch from fixed wages to collective performance-related pay, exploiting a reform in the structure of collective bargaining triggered by a social pact. They find that an increase in the adoption of collective performance-related pay leads to a 3 to 5% productivity gain but that such effect declines over time. They show that the effect on productivity varies substantially by firm…
Wage Flexibility in Regional Labour Markets
Ammermüller A., Lucifora C., Origo F. and Zwick T. Wage flexibility in regional labour markets: evidence from Italy and Germany, Regional Studies. This paper investigates the functioning of regional labour markets in Italy and Germany for different employee groups and regions. It derives theoretical hypotheses on group-specific correlations between regional unemployment and individual wages distinguishing between regions. Using micro-data matched…
