Je-Desto, Je-Umso
This paper argues that German je-desto -sentences are regular verb-second structures. Unlike left-dislocation(-like) structures (such as wenn-dann -clauses or free relative clause constructions with case mis-match and resumption), je-desto -strings are normal, regular prefield structures. A proposal from the literature is developed further, accord-ing to which je -clauses, like relative clauses, belong structurally to the clausal constituent into…
Pre-field phobia – About formal and meaning-related prohibitions on starting a German V2 clause
German is a V2 language, i.e., a declarative clause has the finite verb in the position immediately after the first constituent. Traditionally, this order is derived by raising the verb to C and putting a single constituent into the so-called pre-field. Arguably, there are three options to fill the first position: (i) topicalization (A’-movement), (ii) formal movement, which raises the highest constituent in the ongoing derivation (A-movement), o…
Topic Marking and Illocutionary Force
The main goal of the paper is to determine whether topic marking of a constituent of a clause requires that the clause have independent illocutionary force. To do so, four types of topic marking constructions and, in addition to independent clauses, three types of dependent clauses are investigated. It is shown that for the constructions that mark an aboutness topic it holds that in order for a clause to allow the marking, the clause does not nee…

Byproducts and side effects = Nebenprodukte und Nebeneffekte
The papers collected in this volume have very diverse topics – such as prosodic peculiarities (Meinunger and Hamlaoui & Roussarie), morphological items (McFadden and Steriopolo), or phenomena concerning syntax and its interfaces, such as syntax-morphology (Kamali), syntax-parsing (Winkler), or syntax-pragmatics (Bittner & Dery). The languages considered range from quite prominent German and French via Turkish to very exotic Nuuchahnulth or no lon…
Complex Numeral Expressions
Grafting is a syntactic device developed and defended by van Riemsdijk (2000 and subsequent work) by which two independent input trees are connected via external remerger of internal elements, thus sharing a constituent. Grafting clearly violates standard assumptions about phrase structure. Still, several structures found in natural language are best analyzed in terms of grafting. The present paper discusses one such construction: complex numeral…
The architecture of it -clefts
This paper examines quasi-monoclausal left-peripheral analyses of English it -clefts. Though attractive because such analyses bring out commonalities between it -clefts on the one hand and focus fronting and wh -questions on the other, the range of word order variations available in English it -clefts reveals that such monoclausal analyses of it -clefts lead to considerable complications of implementation, ultimately undoing the gain in terms of …

Datives and Other Cases
This volume provides a state-of-the-art account of research into datives and other morphological cases. The contributors, among them leading scholars in the field, present fresh insights into traditional issues such as the dichotomy between lexical and structural case, and open up fascinating new areas of research. A recurrent feature of the majority of contributions is their combined syntax-semantics perspective. Germanic varieties, Serbian, Alb…
Remarks on the projection of dative arguments in German
Interface restrictions on verb second
This article presents two case studies concerning verb second (V2) in German. It investigates two different phenomena where the characteristic verb raising in German in blocked. The relevant data show clearly that the V2 rule is not blind with respect to the interfaces. It is not merely a syntactic movement rule whose output is interpreted by the phonological component on the one hand and by the conceptual-intentional system on the other. It is r…

Syntactic Aspects of Topic and Comment
The book focuses on the syntactic behavior of argument noun phrases depending on their discourse status. The main language of consideration is German, but it is shown that the observations can be carried over to other languages. The claim is that discourse-new arguments remain inside the VP where they are base generated. The hierarchy of argument projection is claimed to be fix within and across languages. With the major attention to direct objec…
Issues on topics
The present volume contains papers that bear mainly on issues concerning the topic concept. This concept is of course very broad and diverse. Also, different views are expressed in this volume. Some authors concentrate on the status of topics and non-topics in so-called topic prominent languages (i.e. Chinese), others focus on the syntactic behavior of topical constituents in specific European languages (German, Greek, Romance languages). The las…
