  • The Canadian Travel Film Library

Dominique Brégent-Heald, Dominique Brégent‐Heald•ARTICLE•Canadian Journal of Film Studies•2022

Dominique Brégent-Heald, Dominique Brégent‐Heald•ARTICLE•Historical Journal Of Film Radio…•2019

On 28 May 1934, Annette, Emilie, Yvonne, Cecile and Marie Dionne were born to a francophone family living in a farmhouse near North Bay. The Ontario Government would declare the first-ever surviving quintuplets wards of the Crown and relocated them to a specially built nursery under the care of Dr. Allan R. Dafoe. Dubbed Quintupletland, the compound became the province’s most popular tourist attraction during the second half of the decade while t…

  • All Aboard! Travel Films, Railroads, and the North American West, 1897–1910

Dominique Brégent-Heald, Dominique Brégent‐Heald•ARTICLE•The American Review of Canadian…•2015

Beginning with the first travelogues of the late 1890s, the film and tourism industries collaborated both directly and indirectly to shape representations of North America’s western landscape and its people. These non-narrative motion pictures intersected with the rise of mass consumerism, modern tourism, the forces of imperialism and colonialism, as well as industrialized forms of transportation. In particular, railroad travel films from the Can…

On October 21, 1940, world premiere of North West Mounted Police (JWMP) took place in Regina, Saskatchewan, with much fanfare. This epic western, which was producer/director Cecil B. DeMille's first foray into shooting entirely in Technicolor, stars Gary Cooper as Dusty Rivers, a Texas Ranger who crosses 49th parallel in pursuit of Jacques Corbeau (George Bancroft), a ruthless half-breed whiskey smuggler and gunrunner wanted for murder in Texas. …

  • The Tourism of Titillation in Tijuana and Niagara Falls

    Dominique Brégent-Heald, Dominique Brégent‐Heald•ARTICLE•Journal of the Canadian…•2007•References: 1

In the popular imaginary, Tijuana, Mexico is notorious for its liberal laws concerning prostitution, gambling, and narcotics. Conversely, Niagara Falls, Canada apparently offers visitors only wholesome attractions. Yet this sweeping generalization belies the historic parallels that exist between these iconic border towns. In Hollywood films, both Tijuana and Niagara Falls figure as liminal locations of crossing and collision, as well as permissiv…

  • Primitive Encounters

    Dominique Brégent-Heald, Dominique Brégent‐Heald•ARTICLE•Western Historical Quarterly•2007

This article analyzes the relationship between Hollywood and the tourist in dustry in constructing analogous representations of the Canadian Northwest and the U. S. Southwest by comparing Rose-Marie (1936) and Ride the Pink Horse (1947). In representing these western landscapes, film and tourist discourses exhibited a tension between utopic and dystopic images. Moreover, essentialized Indian imagery coded these sites as spaces of authenticity and…
