  • Literature and Ecotheology: From Chaos to Cosmos

    George B Handley•BOOK•Literature and Ecotheology•2024

Literature and Ecotheology: From Chaos to Cosmos challenges us in a time of climate crisis to find more common ground between the dual projects of ecocriticism and ecotheology. This book argues that in our postsecular age, literature has become an important repository of theological wisdom that can, like formal work in ecotheology, provide the moral grounds for environmental care. However, for any cosmological understanding to be adequate to the …

  • What Else Is New: Toward a Postcolonial Christian Theology for the Anthropocene

    Open Access•George B Handley•ARTICLE•Religions•2020•Cited by: 1•References: 9

Although there are many reasons for Christian skepticism regarding climate change, one reason is theological in nature, and therefore, requires a theological solution. This essay explains the theological grounds for climate change denial and for a compromised understanding of the power and creativity of human agency. Drawing inspiration from the ecotheological implications of postcolonial poetics, it seeks to offer revised conceptions of the aton…

  • Climate Change Scepticism: A Transnational Ecocritical Analysis

  • Faith, Sacrifice, and the Earth's Glory in Terrence Malick'sthe Tree of Life

    George B Handley•ARTICLE•Angelaki•2014•References: 9

Terrence Malick's film The Tree of Life revisits many of the questions regarding a Christian theodicy. How, for example, can one reconcile the idea of providence or believe in the meaning of human suffering when life itself is subject to and even dependent on chance and violence? In order to sustain faith in providence in such a universe, Malick suggests that one must be willing to absorb the insults of accident and sacrifice the human drive to c…

  • The Postcolonial Ecology of the New World Baroque

    George B Handley•CHAPTER•Postcolonial ecologies•2011

This chapter examines the postcolonial ecology of the New World Baroque, a theory invoked by Alejo Carpentier in his novel The Lost Steps. More specifically, it considers primitivism—an artistic strategy of postcolonial resistance for Latin American writers—as a means to give voice to nature in Latin America. It discusses Carpentier’s theory of the New World Baroque, derived from his experiences in the Amazonian interior of Venezuela, and suggest…

  • Postcolonial Ecologies: Literatures of the Environment

Elizabeth M Deloughrey, Elizabeth Deloughrey et al.•BOOK•Postcolonial ecologies•2011•Cited by: 82

This book brings ecocritical studies into a dialogue with postcolonial studies. By examining African, Caribbean, Pacific Island, and South Asian literatures and how they depict the relationship between humans and nature, this book makes a compelling argument for a more global approach to thinking through our current environmental crisis. Turning to the contemporary production of postcolonial novelists and poets, this book poses the literary imagi…

  • Down Under: New World Literatures and Ecocriticism

    George B Handley•ARTICLE•The Global South•2007•Cited by: 1

African, Asian, and European diasporas and more recent regional migrations between and among Latin American and Caribbean nations and the United States have challenged the very utility of literary regionalisms which have enjoyed long and fruitful histories in the U. S. South and in Latin America. It is by now well known that regionalism failed in its national aims, but perhaps a new form of regionalism may still prove useful in a more advanced gl…

Derek Walcott's Poetics of the Environment in The Bounty George Handley (bio) The Mexican Nobel Laureate, Octavio Paz, in an essay about modern poetry once argued quite simply: "the immense, stupid, and suicidal waste of natural resources must come to an immediate end if the human species wishes to survive on this earth" (156). Although commonplace, Paz's point is instructive because it demonstrates that we have come to identify the end of time a…
