Land rental market and rural household efficiency in China
Well-functioning factor markets play an important role in improving the performance of the agricultural sector. Our paper examines both technical and allocative efficiencies at the household level, with an application to a cross-section sample of rural households in three provinces of China in 2009. In a first step, we use nonparametric methods to estimate household efficiency. In a second step, we examine econometrically the role of land rental …

Efficiency under Uncertainty and Non‐convexity
This paper investigates the economics of uncertainty using a state‐contingent approach with a focus on the role of non‐convexity. Under efficiency, the slopes of a separating hypersurface measures state‐contingent prices. As argued by Yaari, normalized state‐contingent prices provide a measure of subjective probabilities. But efficiency under non‐convexity can require non‐linear pricing. The analysis identifies non‐convexity conditions under whic…

On Crop Biodiversity, Risk Exposure, and Food Security in the Highlands of Ethiopia
This paper investigates the effects of crop genetic diversity on farm productivity and production risk in the highlands of Ethiopia. Using a moment‐based approach, the analysis uses a stochastic production function capturing mean, variance, and skewness effects. Welfare implications of diversity are evaluated using a certainty equivalent, measured as expected income minus a risk premium (reflecting the cost of risk). We find that the effect of di…
On the Origins and Evolving Role of Money
This paper explores the origins and evolving role of money. It stresses the role of money in solving coordination problems. This role is present with or without exchange. A historical overview of money stresses the evolutionary aspects of monetary institutions. The analysis develops a general evaluation of economic efficiency under transaction costs and imperfect information, and in the presence of public goods and externalities. It identifies a …
Measurement and Sources of Economies of Scope
Scope economies (reflecting the benefit of a multioutput firm) have been defined by Baumol, Panzar, and Willig in the context of cost functions. This paper uses Luenberger's shortage function to develop a general measure of scope economies directly from the underlying technology. The analysis applies under complete as well as partial specialization. Our primal measure of economies of scope is decomposed into four additive parts: one measuring com…
Price policy, poverty, and power within rural West African households
This paper explores the impact of agricultural price policy on poverty in West Africa, a region in which prices are an important tool for raising rural household incomes. A game-theoretic, collective model of household income generation and resource allocation is developed that incorporates three features typical of West African rural households: preference heterogeneity among women and men, individual resource control, and power-mediated bargain…

An Analysis of the Source and Nature of Technical Change
This paper proposes a methodology to investigate the process of technical change with a focus on the dynamic effects of R&D investments on productivity, and on the induced innovation hypothesis for both inputs and outputs. The approach builds on a nonparametric representation of the underlying technology. An application to U.S. agriculture is presented. By distinguishing between private and public R&D investments, the analysis provides useful ins…

The economics of Cain and Abel
The complementarity of the economic systems of nomads and farmers is often overshadowed by the conflicts inherent in the competition over the control of land. The conflict is one of property rights. A dynamic programming model of the West African Sahel is presented that simulates the emergence of a dual economy based on the comparative advantage of the farmer and the pastoralist. The model illustrates that exclusive private property rights have n…

Singularity and Autoregressive Disturbances in Linear Logit Models
The implications of including autoregressive disturbances in linear logit models of demand systems are explored. It is argued that the normality assumption of the error terms is more appropriate in the linear logit model than in a share equation model with additive disturbances (commonly found in the literature). Autoregressive disturbances and their implications for model estimation are discussed in that context. Both theoretical arguments and e…
A Dynamic Analysis of Prices in the U.S. Rice Marketing Channel
Granger causality tests and dynamic multipliers are used to explore the dynamic relationship among prices in the U.S. rice marketing channel. The dynamic multipliers provide information about the speed and magnitude of dynamic price adjustments that is not provided by the Granger causality tests. This information is shown to be useful in explaining the underlying economic relationship among the time series of prices. KEY WORDS: Dynamic multiplier…
