New Cranial and Postcranial Remains of the Once Enigmatic Early Eocene Mammal Wyolestes (Mammalia, Ferae, Hyaenodonta) from North America, and Phylogenetic Evidence for its Interordinal Relationships
Wyolestes is an extinct placental mammal from early Eocene (Wasatchian) rocks of North America whose phylogenetic position has been enigmatic for decades. Known from three species with distinct, high-cusped molars, the genus has been difficult to assign to a higher clade within Placentalia in part because it has, until now, been known primarily from dentitions. Here we describe new postcranial material of Wyolestes iglesius; new cranial, dental, …
A morphometric analysis of early Eocene Euprimate tarsals from Gujarat, India
New fossils from Tadkeshwar Mine (Gujarat, India) increase primate diversity from the early Eocene Cambay Shale
New euprimate postcrania from the early Eocene of Gujarat, India, and the strepsirrhine-haplorhine divergence
Body size and premolar evolution in the early‐middle eocene euprimates of Wyoming
The earliest euprimates to arrive in North America were larger‐bodied notharctids and smaller‐bodied omomyids. Through the Eocene, notharctids generally continued to increase in body size, whereas omomyids generally radiated within small‐ and increasingly mid‐sized niches in the middle Eocene. This study examines the influence of changing body size and diet on the evolution of the lower fourth premolar in Eocene euprimates. The P 4 displays consi…
New fossils of the oldest North American euprimate Teilhardina brandti (Omomyidae) from the paleocene–eocene thermal maximum
More than 25 new specimens of Teilhardina brandti , one of the oldest known euprimates, are reported from earliest Eocene strata of the southern Bighorn Basin, Wyoming. The new fossils include the first upper dentitions, a dentary showing the lower dental formula for the first time, and the first postcrania ascribed to T. brandti (tarsals and terminal phalanges). The elongated navicular and long talar neck suggest that T. brandti was an active ar…

One Nation Underground: The Fallout Shelter in American Culture
In this book Kenneth D. Rose delineates the culture encompassing the atomic shelter issue in the 1950s and 1960s. He delves into a variety of topics: the general political discourse; discussions in popular magazines; treatments of nuclear holocaust in movies, conventional novels, and science fiction; and “what-if ” coverage in local newspaper articles that depicted, often with graphics, the devastation to be anticipated from a nuclear attack. The…
Skull of early EoceneCantius abditus (primates: (Adapiformes) and its phylogenetic implications, with a reevaluation of ?Hesperolemur?actius
A substantially complete skull and mandible of the primitive adapiform Cantius is reported from the Early Eocene Willwood Formation of Wyoming. The mandible contains an almost complete lower dentition in which the lower incisors are strongly inclined and have spatulate crowns, I(2) is larger than I(1), and the canine is large and projecting. The cranium shares many features with those of Notharctus and Smilodectes but differs in having nasals tha…
Southern Strategies: Southern Women and the Woman Suffrage Question
The biographies of more than 800 women form the basis for Elna Green's study of the suffrage and the antisuffrage movements in the South. Green's comprehensive analysis highlights the effects that factors such as class background, marital status, educational level, and attitudes about race and gender roles had in inspiring the region's women to work in favor of, or in opposition to, their own enfranchisement. Green sketches the ranks of both move…

The Early Radiation of Euprimates and the Initial Diversification of Omomyidae
The earliest primates
Remarkable new fossil discoveries and intensive study of fossil evidence has led, during the past decade, and particularly the last few years, to exceptional advances and modifications in our understanding of early primate evolution. New insights have also come from research on extant primates, especially detailed anatomical, functional, and molecular studies. This review, however, focuses on the paleontological evidence. New fossils are spawning…
Foot morphology and evolution in early Eocene Cantius
More than one hundred undescribed foot elements of Cantius and other closely related notharctine adapids (7 species in all) from throughout the early Eocene (Wasatchian) Willwood Formation of the Bighorn Basin, Wyoming, have been analyzed. For four species (Cantius ralstoni, “Copelemur” feretutus, Cantius frugivorus , and? Pelycodus jarrovii ) these represent the first described postcranial material. The clade of Cantius and allied genera in the …

The skeleton of early Eocene Cantius , oldest lemuriform primate
A recently discovered partial skeleton of the adapid Cantius trigonodus from the early Eocene Willwood Formation of the Bighorn Basin, Wyoming, documents substantial new information about the anatomy of the oldest lemuriform primates. It is very similar in all features to its descendant, middle Eocene Notharctus , and both exhibit numerous resemblances to certain extant Malagasy lemurs, particularly Lepilemur , Propithecus , Lemur , and Hapalemur…
