  • Unpacking the "fluidity" of Mestizaje: How anti-indigenous and anti-black racism determine social relations and economic destinations of Mestizos

    Open Access•Emiko Saldívar, E Arenas et al.•ARTICLE•Ethnic and Racial Studies•2024•Cited by: 4•References: 30

In this paper, we examine the centrality of mestizo people in the Mexican national political and social project of mestizaje. We argue that mestizos are far from homogenous, and that exploring their socio-economic and cultural differences sheds light on how racial hierarchies operate in contexts of mestizaje. Using data from the Project for Ethnicity and Race in Latin America (PERLA), we (1) uncover the heterogeneity of the mestizo population in …

  • Uses and abuses of culture: Mestizaje in the era of multiculturalism

    Emiko Saldívar•ARTICLE•Cultural Studies•2018

In this article, I analyse how intercultural ideas, practices and policies inform Mexico’s current racial formation, and how racial categories and meanings are shaped under neoliberalism and the politics of recognition. I argue that the uncritical use of cultural and ethnic differences as the central focus of interculturalism reifies and reproduces the preoccupation with culture and ethnic differences characteristic of the racial project of mesti…

  • Comparing Ideologies of Racial Mixing in Latin America: Brazil and Mexico

    Open Access•Graziella Moraes Silva, Emiko Saldívar•ARTICLE•Sociologia & Antropologia•2018•Cited by: 6•References: 19

By the end of the twentieth century, with the rise of multicultural discourses and identity politics, Latin American ideologies of racial mixture had become increasingly denounced as myths that conceal (and thus support) the reproduction of racial inequalities. These studies have largely been guided by comparisons between countries with widespread racial mixing (usually Brazil, Mexico or Colombia) and countries in which it was less encouraged and…

  • Racial and Ethnic Identities in Mexican Statistics

Emiko Saldívar, Casey Walsh•ARTICLE•Journal of Iberian and Latin…•2014•Cited by: 5

Statistics, generated by censuses, represent knowledge of society and environment used in the government of complex hierarchical societies. In this article we discuss the changing ways that censuses have reflected and constructed corporeal and cultural difference in Mexico. We show that shifts in conceptualizing and identifying racial and ethnic groups in Mexico are associated with larger social dynamics, and our history of these determinations i…

  • It's Not Race, It's Culture: Untangling Racial Politics in Mexico

    Emiko Saldívar•ARTICLE•Latin American and Caribbean…•2014•Cited by: 44•References: 25

Mestizaje and ethnicity are key ideas that inform Mexico's 20th-century racial project. But while mestizaje - as an ideology, state project, and daily practice - has been discussed and criticized at length, these roles for ideas about ethnicity and diversity have not. This article deals with some of the theoretical and political implications of the use of ethnicity for race studies in Mexico. The emergence of the idea of ethnicity in the late 193…

  • Everyday Practices of Indigenismo: An Ethnography of Anthropology and the State in Mexico

    Open Access•Emiko Saldívar•ARTICLE•The Journal of Latin American and…•2011•Cited by: 7•References: 11

  • Indigenismo legal: La Política Indigenista De Los Noventa

    Open Access•Emiko Saldívar•ARTICLE•Revista Mexicana de Ciencias…•2003•Cited by: 2
