Assessing Progress in Research on Industrial Evolution and Economic Growth: A Review Article
Citation Frequency and the Value of Patented Inventions
Through a survey, private economic value estimates were obtained on 964 inventions made in the United States and Germany and on which German patent renewal fees were paid to full-term expiration in, 1995. A search of subsequent U.S. and German patents yielded counts of citations to those patents. Patents renewed to full-term were significantly more highly cited than patents allowed to expire before their full term. The higher an invention's econo…
New Perspectives on Economic Growth and Technological Innovation
International High-Technology Competition
Pricing, Profits, and Technological Progress in the Pharmaceutical Industry
The decades-old debate over pharmaceutical industry prices, profits, and innovation has again intensified. A number of events coalesced to refocus public interest on pharmaceuticals. Contributing to public concern were Bureau of Labor Statistics price index increases for pharmaceuticals far outpacing those for the products of other industries. Another prominent characteristic of the pharmaceutical industry has been its extraordinarily high report…
R & D Reactions to High-Technology Import Competition
For a seventeen-year panel covering 308 U.S. manufacturing corporations, we analyze firms' R&D spending reactions to changes in high-technology imports. On average, companies reduced their R&D/sales ratios in the short run as imports rose. Individual company reactions were heterogeneous, especially for multinational firms. Short-run reactions were more aggressive (i.e., tending toward R&D/sales ratio increases), the more concentrated the markets …
Anti‐antitrust: Ideology or economics? Rejoinder to Armentano
Antitrust: Ideology or economics
Dominick T. Armentano's book, Antitrust and Monopoly: Anatomy of a Policy Failure, 2nd ed., has serious limitations as a scholarly work. Monopolistic price‐raising is even more objectionable under plausible interpretations of Armentano's subjectivist criterion than in the standard case, which assumes equal subjective value for all consumers’ dollar expenditures. Armentano's historical review of leading antitrust cases is also faulty. His evidence…
Corporate Takeovers: The Efficiency Arguments
In recent years, the tender offer takeover has been praised and damned with a ferocity suggesting that the survival of capitalism is at stake. The truth, as in most disputes with substantial metaphysical content, is more prosaic. Some takeovers enhance economic efficiency, some degrade it, and the balance of effects, though not fully known, is most likely a close one. In this essay I try to lay bare the debate's foundations and bring it back to e…
Inter-Industry Technology Flows and Productivity Growth
An unusually rich data set was tapped to explore the relationship between research and development (R and D) and productivity growth. The most-important finding is that, with disaggregated data, the wrong lag hypothesis is not supported: there is no clear indication that the productivity slump of the 1970s resulted from a decrease in the marginal productivity of R and D. Also important is the evidence of substantial returns to used R and D, i.e.,…

Invention and Innovation in the Watt-Boulton Steam-Engine Venture
It is well known how Watt-Boulton steam engine freed England and then all nations from geographic and climatic vagaries of water power and how it permitted man for first time to concentrate great quantities of efficient motive power in one location. But how did this important transformation come about? What lessons about economic characteristics of technological and can we learn from steam engine's history?
