Mass attitudes towards Russia’s aggression against Ukraine
This paper studies variation in mass attitudes towards the Russo-Ukrainian War. Although most Europeans express dismay at Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, more ambivalent or even pro-Kremlin positions are not rare. Drawing on the literature on foreign policy and war, we hypothesise that support for the aggressor may stem from a quartet of factors: economic interests, ideological preferences, partisan alignment, and disinformation. We examine …
Party responsiveness over time
Parties’ ideological responsiveness to public opinion is a key finding in the party politics literature. Leveraging the longitudinal coverage of public opinion and party position data, this research note shows that findings of left-right ideological responsiveness are limited to a specific time period. We find that since the mid-1990s, left-right shifts in public opinion are no longer significantly associated with party position changes on the sa…
The implications of cohabitation between working age children and parents for political opinions

Transforming Tradition
Transforming Tradition offers the first serious look at folksong revivals, vibrant meldings of popular and folk culture that captured public awareness in the 1950s and 1960s. Best remembered for such songs as Tom Dooley and for performers like the Kingston Trio and Joan Baez, the revival of that era gave rise to hootenannies, coffeehouses, and blues and bluegrass festivals, sowing a legacy of popular interest that lives today. Many of the contrib…

On the Values of American Folklorists
AlanJabbour's presidential address, delivered 29 October 1988 at the American Folklore Society's Centennial meeting in Cambridge, Massachusetts, uses the Centennial as an occasion to reflect on the values and traditions of American folklorists. The address suggests several underlying values that have impelled folklorists in America, notes the continuity of those values since thefounding of the Society, and explores some quandaries which those val…
Folklife Annual 1985
Dance to the Fiddle, March to the Fife
The 651 tunes presented in this book represent an important segment of the musical heritage of North America and comprise what may well be the largest collection of Anglo-Celtic-American instrumental folk music. Tunes brought over by the first settlers from England, Germany, Scotland, and Ireland remained essentially unchanged despite many variations in the less accessible parts of Pennsylvania, thus preserving a musical tradition that stretches …
