First-gen in the classroom
First-generation scholars are individuals who are the first in their family to attend a four-year college or university. In response to affirmative action bans, admissions committees have begun to use first-generation status as a way to promote a diverse student body, leading to an increase in the number of first generation students. Within the sociology of education, first-generation scholars are typically discussed from a deficit-based perspect…
Advocating navigating in the (non-)Academic landscape
In recent years, the Linguistic Society of America (LSA) has reinforced its commitment not only to serve as a venue for the dissemination of current research, but also as a site of professionalization and capacity building for linguists of a variety of career interests and trajectories. This paper represents a collaboration between two bodies within the LSA: the First-Generation Access and Equity Committee and the Linguistics Beyond Academia Spec…
Identifying, understanding, and supporting diverse first-generation scholars in linguistics
One in three college graduates is in the first generation of their family to complete a bachelor’s degree (NCES 2016), including 27% of doctoral students (CGS 2022) and 28% of tenure-track faculty (Morgan et al. 2022). Although there exists ample diversity of perspective and experience among first-generation students, relative to continuing-generation students, they are more likely to work full-time, care for dependents, and/or contribute to the …

Polish inchoative deadjectival verb forms have been noted in Bobaljik (2012) to exemplify a potentially problematic paradigm for the Comparative-Change-of-State Generalization described within the same work. While Polish causative and anticausative deadjectival verbs formed from adjectives that display suppletion in the comparative form show the expected corresponding suppletion in the verb form as well, the inchoative deadjectival verbs display …
Non-uniformity in phonologizing phase heads
Typical of a Turkic language, vowel harmony regularly occurs in Kazakh. In this paper, I address the exceptional behavior of the comitative marker in Kazakh regarding palatal harmony, and show that it follows from the K head being phonologized separately from its complement. This is crucial following work on Cophonologies by Phase (CBP), in which phase heads are claimed to be phonologized with their complements (see Sande & Jenks 2018, Sande 2019…
