  • Towards a theory of scope rigidity

Open Access•Utku Turk, Aron Hirsch•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the Workshop on…•2026

Turkish polar questions contain a focus-sensitive clitic =mI. When =mI attaches to a DP and the clause is embedded, we observe that the matrix clause can be read as either declarative or interrogative. We argue that the reading depends on the height of the focus relative to the embedded C. To derive the matrix question reading, the focused DP covertly moves above C. Turkish is often described as scope rigid, indicating that scope shifting covert …

  • Superiority effects with wh-adjuncts in Turkish

Open Access•Sadira Lewis, Utku Turk•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the Linguistic…•2025

This paper examines Superiority constraints in Turkish, a wh-in-situ language that permits both A- and A'-scrambling. Previous accounts argue that Turkish lacks Superiority constraints when multiple wh-phrases occur within the same clause; that is, both wh-phrases can freely move to the left periphery, and the lower syntactic wh-phrase can take scope over the higher one at LF. Previous accounts have only observed Superiority phenomena in Turkish …

  • Hypothetical Comparison in Turkish

Open Access•Utku Turk, Ömer Demirok•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the Workshop on…•2021

In this paper, we present a preliminary investigation of the complex formative -mışcasına in Turkish, used for hypothetical comparison. We observe that -mışcasına differs from its counterparts in previously studied hypothetical comparison constructions in one key aspect: It can naturally target non-eventive nominal predicates. Furthermore, we find that -mışcasına is primarily licensed in linguistic contexts that make a gradable property available…

  • Nanosyntactic Analysis of Turkish Case System

Open Access•Utku Turk, Pavel Caha•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the Workshop on…•2021

This paper takes two challenging characteristics of the Turkish case system and shows that a nanosyntactic analysis can cover both. The first puzzle is that some cases, namely ACC and GEN, in Turkish show alternations between specific and non-specific forms, while other cases like DAT and INS do not. The second puzzle concerns containment relations in morphology. Caha (2009) proposes that cases stand in a containment relation. In some languages l…

  • Tackling the Augmentative Puzzle in Turkish

    Open Access•Utku Turk•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the Workshop on…•2020

This paper deals with the suffix -cIk in Turkish, and argues that the suffix -cIk has an augmentative meaning, as well as a diminutive meaning which has been mentioned in the literature extensively. The different meanings of the suffix -cIk are due to two different structures that I propose. While the structure of the diminutive is made of one single morpheme -cIk, that of the augmentative suffix is composed of two morphemes: -cI and -k. I offer …
