Conceptualising the Pedagogue as Wanderer
Our paper contemplates wanderer figures in literature as inspiration for rethinking the academic as pedagogue and the practice of reading in the context of ongoing ecological uncertainties. Academia is permeated by performance pressure in teaching and research. By prioritising productivity, growth and speed, universities are complicit with the anthropocentric values of fossil‐fuel culture. Against this we reimagine the pedagogue as a wild/rewildi…

The Slothful Protest
This article examines how Terézia Mora's Darius‐Kopp trilogy ( Der einzige Mann auf dem Kontinent (2009), Das Ungeheuer (2013), Auf dem Seil (2018)) and Iris Hanika's novel Das Eigentliche (2010) use the early Christian motif of acedia to critique contemporary capitalism. It argues that in these works acedia , the originally theological discourse on the ‘sin of sloth’, articulates a form of passive protest against the conditions of working life a…

Heimat as Nonplace and Terrain Vague in Jenny Erpenbeck's Heimsuchung and Julia Schoch's Mit der Geschwindigkeit des Sommers
This article examines the troubling image of postunification Germany as a terrain vague—a potentially unbounded, hostile space continually exposed to the vicissitudes of history—in Jenny Erpenbeck's Heimsuchung (Haunted by Home, 2008) and Julia Schoch's Mit der Geschwindigkeit des Sommers (With the Speed of the Summer, 2009). Cosgrove argues that both works subvert the rural idyll of Heimat to produce a critical perspective on the postunification…
Melancholy Competitions
This article examines how W.G. Sebald's melancholy understanding of history influences his reading of Günter Grass's Aus dem Tagebuch einer Schnecke und Wolfgang Hildesheimer's Tynset . Sebald pits Grass against Hildesheimer in a melancholy competition which tests the authenticity of 1960s discourse on ‘Trauer’. His criteria for the standard of authentic sadness are obscured, however, by his analysis of the writers’ use of symbols and references …
