The Social Psychology of Groups
This landmark theory of interpersonal relations and group functioning argues that the starting point for understanding social behavior is the analysis of dyadic interdependence. Such an analysis portrays the ways in which the separate and joint actions of two persons affect the quality of their lives and the survival of their relationship. The authors focus on patterns of interdependence, and on the assumption that these patterns play an importan…
The Social Roots of Discrimination
Individual versus group discontinuity
Competition and cooperation between groups and between individuals
Reply to Turner's comments
In response to Turner it was argued that the maximizing outcomes assumption is plausible, his ‘continuous variable’ assumption is implausible, and his assertion that sets of pull scores yield unconfounded measures is incorrect. In addition to considering still further matters, such as the reduction of Tajfel matrices to simplified‐binary matrices, data from two new experiments were presented. One experiment reveals that, contrary to Turner's rese…
On the measurement of social orientations in the minimal group paradigm
Four procedures for measuring between‐group orientations were described and evaluated. These include the procedures developed by Tajfel and his associates, Brewer and Silver, Locksley et al., Ng, and a revised procedure. The revised procedure was designed to measure seven between‐group Orientations. Use of the new measure and the Tajfel measure with college sophomores revealed somewhat different results. The Tajfel measure revealed evidence for t…

Preference for modes of dispute resolution as a function of process and decision control
Procedural Justice
Some Determinants of Preference for Modes of Conflict Resolution
This experimental study manipulated presence or absence of temporal urgency, presence or absence of a judgmental standard, and the correspondence or noncorrespondence of outcomes among disputants in a factorial design to assess their effects on preferences for five dispute-resolution procedures arranged along a continuum of decreasing third-party intervention: autocratic decision-making, arbitration, a moot, mediation, and bargaining. Arbitration…

Competition and cooperation between groups and between individuals
Interpersonal communication in small groups
Major conclusions drawn from experimental work with small face-to-face groups are summarized. The authors report an experimental study in which (1) amount of pressure toward uniformity, and (2) degree to which members perceived the group as homogeneously composed was manipulated. It was found that “

Individual versus group discontinuity
The development of contractual norms in bargaining
Although a great deal of research has been done during the past decade and a half on the processes associated with conforming to norms (e.g., Deutsch and Gerard, 1955; Hollander, 1960; and Jones, Jones, and Gergen, 1963), very little work has been done on the prior processes through which the norms come into existence. In understanding these processes and conditions which produce norms it may be useful to begin by inquiring into the ways in which…
