  • Detachments detection at the ‘Grand Stairway’ in the Room 38 of the Domus Aurea using the Picus system

Open Access•Francesca Mariani, Michele Lo Giudice et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Cultural Heritage•2025

Automatic detection of detachments in a large fresco. • The comparison between the manual and automatic map is verified. • The PICUS map use a colorimetric scale highlighting accurately the detachments. • A single operator maps large areas of the fresco in a short time. • The method revolutionizes the approach to detection and analysis of defective areas. The purpose of this research was the diagnosis of the detachments and the analysis of the su…

  • Deep learning for the detection and classification of adhesion defects in antique plaster layers

Open Access•Michele Lo Giudice, Francesca Mariani et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Cultural Heritage•2024

This paper aims is to show an automated intelligent measurement system for the detection of adhesion defects between architectural antique plaster layers. The method emulates the traditional conservators’ procedure based on acoustical perturbations, auscultation, detection and classification. The system makes use of a hardware device, known in literature as PICUS, for the generation and acquisition of acoustic signals, while the processing of the…
