The emotional geography of prison life
Accounts of prison life consistently describe a culture of mutual mistrust, fear, aggression and barely submerged violence. Often too, they explain how prisoners adapt to this environment—in men’s prisons, at least—by putting on emotional ‘masks’ or ‘fronts’ of masculine bravado which hide their vulnerabilities and deter the aggression of their peers. This article does not contest the truth of such descriptions, but argues that they provide a par…
Risk Communication and Public Health
Controversies about risks to public health regularly hit the news, whether about food safety, environmental issues, medical interventions, or ‘lifestyle’ risks such as drinking. To those trying to manage or regulate risks, public reactions sometimes seem bizarre. To the public, the behaviour of those supposedly ‘in charge’ can seem no less odd. Trust is currently at a premium. This new edition of Risk Communication and Public Health covers the th…

Early in 2009, the newly appointed Director of Offender Management, South‐East Region, asked the Governor of Grendon to lead a flagship project to improve the quality of prisoner‐staff relationships in the region's prisons. A recent HM Chief Inspector's report on Parkhurst had been highly critical, while Grendon has been repeatedly praised by HM Chief Inspector for its outstanding and excellent prisoner‐staff relationships. The flagship project, …

The growing worldwide prevalence of type 2 diabetes mellitus in the young, as underlined by an earlier International Diabetes Federation (IDF) Consensus Statement 1, has highlighted a significant shortfall of data on the epidemiology of the disorder and the identification and treatment of children and adolescents at risk of progression to this disease. Urbanization, unhealthy diets, and increasingly sedentary lifestyles have contributed to increa…

Risks to health: Some key issues in management, regulation and communication
This paper reviews some key issues in risk analysis, management and communication. From secondary school blues to lifelong learning? - aspects of the retrospective re-evaluation of formative educational experience by adults
An introductory section traces the connections between published autobiographical accounts of education in childhood, as seen in retrospect, and the construction of hypotheses for more formal research into the continuing influences of formative educational experience for adult learners and educationists. The reported research relates to the re-evaluation of aspects of primary and secondary schooling by 21 adults, seven each from the UK, Germany a…
The heart of distance learning: A student's perspective
This article takes the form of a personal and reflective account of the author's experience of studying at master's degree level, by distance learning. He also employs the term long‐distance learning to describe the particular circumstance in which learners are so geographically isolated that their studies are conducted without direct face‐to‐face contact at any stage. He then outlines a set of basic factors which he considers to underpin success…
The Path of Grace: Social Organisation and Temple Worhsip in a Vaishnava Sect
Modelling complex conflicts: Formalism or expertise
The use of game theory to study international conflict has seen peaks and troughs of enthusiasm, high hopes alternating with disillusionment. A revival in recent years is evidenced by the wide interest aroused by non-technical, accessible applications—notably Axelrod’s work on cooperation. Meanwhile, the increasing use of computers to analyze many types of decision lends credence to the notion that with this new-found analytical power, one can mo…
Uncertainty and conflict: Combining conflict analysis and strategic choice
This paper examines the presumptions behind, and methods within, two approaches toward the analysis of decision problems – Conflict Analysis and Strategic Choice. These offer complementary perspectives, based respectively on particular notions of conflict and uncertainty. It is suggested that these perspectives can usefully be combined in order to provide more effective ways of helping with complex decision problems, and some preliminary forms of…
