Understanding the bone and antler assemblages from Star Carr
Bone and antler projectile points from the Meso-Neolithic site Zamostje 2, Moscow region, Russia
This volume of the series 'Untersuchungen und Materialien zur Steinzeit in Schleswig-Holstein und im Ostseeraum' represents the proceedings of a workshop held at the Centre for Baltic and Scandinavian Archaeology (ZBSA) in Schleswig in March 2016. It is a part of the editors' project 'Neubewertung von Chronologie und Stratigraphie des frhholoznen Fundplatzes Hohen Viecheln (Mecklenburg-Vorpommern) unter besonderer Bercksichtigung der diagnostisch…
The Early Mesolithic fisheries of southern Scandinavia
Southern Scandinavian Mesolithic research has one of the longest traditions within archaeology, dating back to the 1820s and 1830s. However, a combination of site visibility and an emphasis on the Mesolithic-Neolithic transition has meant that research has primarily been directed towards the Late Mesolithic Erteblle culture (c. 5400-4000 cal. BC) at the expense of the Early Mesolithic Maglemose culture (c. 9600-6400 cal. BC). Whilst fishing durin…
The Mesolithic bone industries of northeast Germany and their geo-archaeological background
Early Mesolithic bone projectile points of the Urals
During excavations of peat bog and cave sites various Early Mesolithic projectile points of the Urals were obtained. Nowadays these artefacts include bone arrowheads and harpoons. Stone projectile points of this period have not been found yet. Early Mesolithic bone arrowheads were found at the site Syun II in the southeastern Urals, the bottom layers of the Beregovaya I and II sites in the Gorbunovo peat bog, and in Lobvinskaya cave in the middle…

Excavations at Star Carr: Past and present
Star Carr is a world renowned site first excavated in the late 1940s by Grahame Clark. These excavations revealed organic remains which are incredibly rare, though there are some parallels with sites in Germany and Denmark. The evidence from Star Carr has been debated over the decades, but in 2004 new excavations commenced with the aim of answering some of the questions which had been posed about this important Mesolithic site. One of the alarmin…

Radiocarbon dating bone and antler artefacts from Mesolithic Hohen Viecheln (Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Germany)
excavations at Hohen Viecheln, on the shore of Lake Schwerin, form one of the most important assemblages of Mesolithic bone/antler tools in Germany, including over 300 projectile points. Re-evaluation of Schuldt's excavation records has created doubts about the published stratigraphic sequence. For reliable chronologies of different tool types, therefore, it is necessary to directly date diagnostic artefacts. However, artefacts were consolidated …
Nordic Visits to Hohen Viecheln, Mecklenburg
Lost at the bottom of the lake. Early and Middle Mesolithic leister points found in the bog Rönneholms Mosse, southern Sweden
During the Early and Middle Mesolithic the bog Rnneholms Mosse, situated in central Scania, southernmost Sweden, was part of a large and shallow lake. It filled up with organic material over a long time, lasting until the middle part of the Atlantic period. Due to large-scale peat extraction in the bog, surveys and excavations have been conducted for a number of years. Besides a large number of small campsites, numerous slotted points, harpoon an…
An evaluation of the antler headdress evidence from Hohen Viecheln
Five possible antler headdresses have been reported from Hohen Viecheln over the last 60 years. This paper will address and discuss these objects in the light of new findings and discoveries. In the end, one of the five artefacts can, while another one may be assigned to the group of headdresses. Besides the long-known bifacially worked headdress HV1 this paper presents a finding that remained undiscussed over the last decades (HV5). Both show cl…
The Early Mesolithic bone and antler industry in Latvia, eastern Baltic
The Early Holocene in the Eastern Baltic, as in the rest of Northern Europe, was marked by pronounced changes in the environment and human ways of life. The centres of settlement shifted from the major river valleys to inland lakes and river systems. One such example is the Zvejnieki II habitation site on the shore of Lake Burtnieks in northern Latvia, which has yielded a rich assemblage of bone and antler artefacts. The article examines the stra…
