Experiences of living with, managing, and preventing reoccurrence of Diabetic Foot Ulcers: Restoring context and complexity to health and illness research
Diabetes is a major global health concern, with diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) presenting a common complication. Interest is growing in people’s lived experiences of DFUs, including their management and prevention. Typically, research has highlighted the disruptive and extended impact of DFUs, and has focused on the role of intrinsic, individual factors (e.g. knowledge, physical capabilities and personal choices) in their development and management.…
Pre‐adolescent children's experiences of receiving diabetes‐related support from friends and peers: A qualitative study
BACKGROUND: While pre-adolescent children with type 1 diabetes receive most support from their parents/caregivers, others also contribute to their care. This study explored pre-adolescent children's experiences of receiving diabetes-related support from friends and peers. The objective was to identify how children could be better supported by their friends and peers to undertake diabetes self-management. METHODS: In-depth interviews with 24 child…

AIM AND OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to describe and explore parents' information and support needs when their child is diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, including their views about the timing and chronology of current support provision. Our objective was to identify ways in which parents could be better supported in the future. DESIGN AND PARTICIPANTS: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 54 parents of children with type 1 diabet…
Is Consulting Patients About Their Health Service Preferences a Useful Exercise
As part of the shift toward patient-centered care, patients are increasingly being consulted about their preferences for health services and interventions, including those explored during randomized controlled trials (RCTs), to ensure that service recommendations are aligned to their own circumstances and needs. Hence, we interviewed patients ( N = 40) who participated in a randomized control trial comparing diabetes education courses delivered u…
Supporting self-management after attending a structured education programme: A qualitative longitudinal investigation of type 1 diabetes patients’ experiences and views
Our findings highlight potential limitations to group-based forms of follow-up support for sustaining diabetes self-management. To maintain the clinical benefits of structured education for patients with type 1 diabetes over time, course graduates may benefit from and prefer ongoing, one-to-one support from health care professionals trained in the programme's practices and principles. This support should be tailored and personalised to reflect pa…

Class Distinction as a Way of Doing Church: The Early Fathers and the Christian Plebs
Roman notions of social and legal distinction helped to shape the approach of certain pre-Nicene Fathers to the ordering of the church. The social distinction between ordo and plebs and the legal one between honestior and humilior helped these Fathers to differentiate the particular rights and responsibilities of clergy and laity, while the concept of patronage and that of the paterfamilias helped them to define the particular role and authority …

The Use of Stored Text in Computer-Aided Conversation: A Single-Case Experiment
Augmentative communication (AC) systems with synthesized speech output have been developed for nonspeaking people. Most AC devices that aim to support social conversation have been designed to help the user generate novel utterances as quickly as possible. However, they remain too slow to support effective, real-time conversation. Preconstructed phrases have been shown capable of supporting socially effective conversations with a succession of ne…
