  • Unsettling the City, Sedimentations of Place

    Open Access•Joella Bitter, Bettina Ng’weno•ARTICLE•City & Society•2025•References: 19

Building on an anthropology of the city, this special section aims to further pry open "the city" by tarrying with the material and sensorial relationships that accrue between cities and their residents even while hanging in suspension/motion. Through these concerns with the material and the sensorial, we contribute to the emergent anthropological conversation about the ways in which the felt textures of place matter to the city, atmospherically,…

  • Gathering Cities, Speculating Wind: Listening in Dry Season Gulu

    Open Access•Joella Bitter•ARTICLE•City & Society•2025•References: 18

What is the place of the wind in analyses of the city? In late 2016, and into 2017, forceful dry season winds in Gulu, Uganda, provoked frequent commentary. This short ethnographic essay endeavors to think with these winds (of weather and breath) and to speculate their implications for "the city" vis-à-vis its lived, sensory geographies. Using listening methodologies drawn from ethnography, sonic praxis, and Black studies, I consider windy encoun…

  • Sampling as ethnographic method/remixing Gulu City

    Open Access•Joella Bitter•ARTICLE•American Anthropologist•2023•Cited by: 3•References: 39

This article describes the process of producing Gulu SoundTracks, a digital sonic ethnographic project accessible at gulusoundtracks.org, with four Ugandan music producers based in Gulu. The album comprises eight digital audio tracks that tell stories about Gulu musically through the compositional mixing of field soundscape recordings. Using field recordings as samples opened up sampling as a multimodal method for ethnographic storytelling which …

  • Vital Atmospherics: Sonic City-Making in Africa

    Joella Bitter•ARTICLE•Journal of African Cultural Studies•2023•References: 59

Recent concern for noise in African cities has placed the sonic environment at the center of questions of cityness. This article explores the broadcast of loud music as part of a vital atmospheric which makes the city and sustains everyday life in Gulu, Uganda. I consider everyday Acoli sound concepts wo (noise) and dwan matek (loud sound) with and against concepts of “noise” as it is enacted by environmental regulations concerned with the crimin…

  • Cross-fading the City

Joella Bitter•ARTICLE•Resonance The Journal of Sound…•2021

Widely discussed among scholars of cities in Africa is the need to conceive these cities as relational formations, but rarely is the sensory addressed. Scholarship on urban soundscapes has tended to emphasize aesthetic and technological practices without grappling with their aural political import. This article brings together these conversations in order to address the intersections of urban sound and politics in a small Ugandan city. Drawing on…
