  • Human capital quality and the immigrant wage gap

Open Access•Serge Coulombe, Gilles Grenier et al.•ARTICLE•IZA Journal of Migration•2014•Cited by: 10•References: 30

We propose a new methodology for analyzing determinants of the wage gap between immigrants and natives. A Mincerian regression framework is extended to include GDP per capita in an immigrant's country of birth as a proxy for the quality of schooling and work experience acquired in that country. We find that Canadian immigrants' returns to schooling and work experience significantly increase with the GDP per capita of their country of birth. The c…

Coulombe S. and Tremblay J.-F. Migration and skills disparities across the Canadian provinces, Regional Studies. This paper compares the skill intensity and schooling of the international immigrant, interprovincial migrant and Canadian-born population using data constructed from the 2003 International Adult Literacy and Skills Survey (IALSS). On average, international immigrants to Canada have more years of schooling but a lower skill level than …

  • Globalization and Regional Disparity

    Serge Coulombe•ARTICLE•Regional Studies•2007•Cited by: 1•References: 3

Coulombe S. (2007) Globalization and regional disparity: a Canadian case study, Regional Studies 41, 1–17. In this paper international and interprovincial trade flows are modelled as time-varying controls of steady-state growth paths. The models use conditional-convergence, time-series–cross-sectional analysis of Canadian provincial data over the 1981–2000 sample period. International trade appears to have a significant and substantial positive l…

  • Economic integration and the diversification of regional exports

Michel Beine, Serge Coulombe•ARTICLE•Journal of Economic Geography•2006•Cited by: 1•References: 1

We investigate the impact of Canada–U.S. trade integration on the degree of export diversification of the Canadian regions. Trade integration is captured through the decrease of trade-weighted tariffs that were boosted by implementation of the Canadian–U.S. Free Trade Agreement. We found strong evidence to support integration's long-run impact on the patterns of absolute exports diversification. Significantly, this new finding remains robust to t…

  • Human Capital, Urbanization and Canadian Provincial Growth

    Serge Coulombe•ARTICLE•Regional Studies•2003•Cited by: 1•References: 3

COULOMBE S. (2003) Human capital, urbanization and Canadian provincial growth, Reg. Studies 37 , 239-250. This paper investigates the conditional convergence of both human capital indicators and nominal per capita income across Canadian provinces in a panel-data empirical framework. Long-run relative provincial steady states are determined by relative rates of urbanization, one-time shocks to Quebec's and Alberta's relative steady states, and a N…

  • New Evidence of Convergence Across Canadian Provinces

    Serge Coulombe•ARTICLE•Regional Studies•2000•Cited by: 10•References: 3

COULOMBE S. (2000) New evidence of convergence across Canadian provinces: the role of urbanization, Reg. Studies 34, 713-725. This paper uses the conditional convergence model for explaining the relative evolution of per capita income across the 10 provinces of the Canadian federation between 1950 and 1996. Provincial relative per capita income steady states are determined by the relative rates of urbanization. Empirical results indicate that the…

  • Discrimination versus English Proficiency in the National Hockey League

Marc Lavoie, Gilles Grenier et al.•ARTICLE•Canadian Public Policy•1989•References: 1

Economists do not usually make the headlines in the sports news, as our recent article on discrimination in the NHL did. This intrusion, however, did not seem very productive, judging by the comments of sportswriters. It is thus with some relief that we read Michael Krashinsky's comment on our article. The theory he proposes has some interest. We actually called it 'the language thesis' in our original submission (Lavoie et al., 1986:9-11), the d…
