  • Langues utilisées à la maison et au travail à Montréal par les immigrants entre 2001 et 2016

    Gilles Grenier•ARTICLE•Recherches sociographiques•2023•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 10

  • Immigrant linguistic integration in the multilingual context of Montreal

    Open Access•Ibrahim Bousmah, Gilles Grenier•ARTICLE•Language Problems & Language…•2021•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 5

We investigate the relative intensity of use of English and French at home for allophone immigrants in the Montreal metropolitan area. We find that the linguistic distances between immigrants’ mother tongues and English and French have an important impact on the relative intensities of use at home of the two Canadian official languages. However, immigrants whose mother tongues are closer to French than to English are relatively less likely to use…

  • Quebec’s language policy and economic globalization

    Gilles Grenier•ARTICLE•Language Problems & Language…•2019•Citada por: 4•Referencias: 3

This article examines the economic situation of language groups in Quebec since the 1970s. Particular attention is paid to the contexts of economic globalization, where English has become the most used world lingua franca, and of immigration now being the major source of population growth. Viewing language as a market where supply and demand determine outcomes, the purpose of Bill 101 was to increase the value and the use of French. The relative …

  • Are Quebecers More Stressed Out at Work than Others? An Investigation into the Differences between Quebec and the Rest of Canada in Level of Work Stress

    Golnaz Sedigh, Rebecca A Devlin et al.•ARTICLE•Canadian Public Policy•2017•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 2

Work stress is costly and decreases productivity. Quebecers are much more likely to report high work stress than other Canadians. Using data from the Canadian Community Health Survey spanning 2003–2012, we study the determinants of reported work stress. Chronic disease, mental health, and lifestyle choices all contribute to work stress. Despite including a large variety of influences, living in Quebec is persistently associated with higher work s…

  • Immigration in Quebec

    Brahim Boudarbat, Gilles Grenier•ARTICLE•Canadian ethnic studies•2017•Citada por: 3•Referencias: 1

This article provides an overview of some key issues related to immigration in Quebec. Quebec stands out from the rest of Canada in terms of the origin of its immigrants, who come mainly from francophone countries. Quebec immigrants are relatively better educated than those elsewhere in Canada, but have higher unemployment rates. Our overview of the research examining the impact of immigration on the economy found that immigration has a relativel…

  • Human capital quality and the immigrant wage gap

Open Access•Serge Coulombe, Gilles Grenier et al.•ARTICLE•IZA Journal of Migration•2014•Citada por: 10•Referencias: 30

We propose a new methodology for analyzing determinants of the wage gap between immigrants and natives. A Mincerian regression framework is extended to include GDP per capita in an immigrant's country of birth as a proxy for the quality of schooling and work experience acquired in that country. We find that Canadian immigrants' returns to schooling and work experience significantly increase with the GDP per capita of their country of birth. The c…

  • How can language be linked to economics

    Weiguo Zhang, Gilles Grenier•ARTICLE•Language Problems & Language…•2013•Citada por: 6

As the use of languages is playing a more and more important role in economic activities with the globalization of the world economy, there is growing interest in the relationship between language and economic theory. The rapidly expanding literature in this field, however, is highly fragmented. It is difficult to tell what this field of study focuses on, what has actually been investigated, and what remains to be studied. The authors attempt to …

  • Linguistic and Economic Characteristics of Francophone Minorities in Canada

    Gilles Grenier•ARTICLE•Journal of Multilingual and…•1997

This paper analyses and compares the Canadian francophone minorities of Ontario and New Brunswick in order to see how wellthey have done in preserving their identity and in achieving economic success. The analysis is performed with micro data from the 1981 and 1991 Canadian censuses. Demographic trends and language use attributes are firstpresented, followed by a discussion of some characteristics thatare related to social and economic status. Th…

  • The Changing Labour Market Position of Canadian Immigrants

David E Bloom, Gilles Grenier et al.•ARTICLE•Canadian Journal of Economics/Revue…•1995

"This paper uses pooled 1971, 1981, and 1986 Canadian census data to evaluate the extent to which (1) the earnings of Canadian immigrants at the time of immigration fall short of the earnings of comparable Canadian-born individuals, and (2) immigrants' earnings grow more rapidly over time than those of the Canadian born. Variations in the labour market assimilation of immigrants according to their gender and country of origin are also analysed. T…

  • Discrimination versus English Proficiency in the National Hockey League

Marc Lavoie, Gilles Grenier et al.•ARTICLE•Canadian Public Policy•1989•Referencias: 1

Economists do not usually make the headlines in the sports news, as our recent article on discrimination in the NHL did. This intrusion, however, did not seem very productive, judging by the comments of sportswriters. It is thus with some relief that we read Michael Krashinsky's comment on our article. The theory he proposes has some interest. We actually called it 'the language thesis' in our original submission (Lavoie et al., 1986:9-11), the d…
