  • Commentary: Frames and contexts

    Open Access•Jenny Cook‐gumperz, Jenny Cook-Gumperz et al.•ARTICLE•Pragmatics Quarterly Publication…•2022

One of the main challenges resulting from the past two decades of shift toward detailed micro-analytic studies of language and interaction has been the awareness of a need to relate microanalysis to wider social-cultural aspects of interactional situations

  • Entextualizing institutional memories: Retelling the academic story

    Jenny Cook‐gumperz•ARTICLE•Text and Talk•2011

This paper explores the making of academic knowledge as discourse. It reports on the closing down of an academic program based on memories reconstructed through narrative interviews of two professors who organized this program. A narrative analysis of the two long interviews contrasting performance styles reveals differences in response by the two professors, even though their position within the institution is nominally the same. Their tales eme…

  • Bernstein, educational change, and gendered language

    Jenny Cook‐gumperz, Jenny Cook-Gumperz•ARTICLE•Multilingua•2009•Cited by: 2•References: 3

This paper focuses on a little known Bernstein concept of 'gender codes' developed in the study of schooling, suggesting that schools transmit hidden gender messages though a range of semiotic devices. Initially, the paper shows how Bernstein's 1970s' research provided a novel way of looking at some critical issues current in educational sociology, to address knowledge transmission and socialization across generational and class differences. Bern…

  • The Social Construction of Literacy

    Open Access•Jenny Cook‐gumperz, Jenny Cook-Gumperz•BOOK•Social Construction of Literacy•2006•Cited by: 20

Literacy - the ability to produce and interpret written text - has long been viewed as the basis of all school achievement; a measure of success that defines both an 'educated' person, and an educable one. In this volume, a team of leading experts raise questions central to the acquisition of literacy. Why do children with similar classroom experiences show different levels of educational achievement? And why do these differences in literacy, and…

  • The social construction of literacy

    Open Access•Jenny Cook‐gumperz•CHAPTER•Social Construction of Literacy•2006

Educational institutions, their promises and limitations were at the center of public debate for most of the twentieth century. Now in the twenty‐first century schooling continues to be seen as an institutional force both for bringing about social change and for providing stability. When outcomes are not as expected or when desired transformations do not come about, then the problems are seen as directly attributable to educational failure. Over …

  • Making Space for Bilingual Communicative Practice

    John J Gumperz, Jenny Cook‐gumperz•ARTICLE•Intercultural Pragmatics•2005•Cited by: 22•References: 3

This paper argues that bilingual communication should not be conceived of as something distinct from everyday communicative interaction. Monolingual and bilingual children do not differ in what they do with language, but in how they do it. Whereas monolinguals rely on style switching and voicing, bilinguals employ these strategies in addition to their bilingual resources. Code-switching for bilinguals serves as an indexical strategy which functio…

  • Narrative Accounts in Gatekeeping Interviews: Intercultural Differences or Common Misunderstandings

    Jenny Cook‐gumperz, Jenny Cook-Gumperz et al.•ARTICLE•Language and Intercultural…•2002•Cited by: 2•References: 3

In gatekeeping interviews candidates must rely on narrative strategies to demonstrate their suitability for a position. This includes the ability to project in their accounts 'an institutional self'. In this paper we will compare native with non-native English-speaking candidates and consider how culturally based differences in communicative background affect the conduct of the interaction

    Jenny Cook‐gumperz, Jenny Cook-Gumperz et al.•ARTICLE•Research on Language and Social…•2001•Cited by: 13•References: 4

This article examines how students use gendered discourse practices in small peer group settings to accomplish their school tasks. The analysis contributes to the separate worlds hypothesis by showing how Latino children interactionally orient to their peer group as a gendered context. For 1 academic year, observations were made in an elementary bilingual classroom. The target 3rd-grade teacher referred to her student groups as "families," a labe…

  • Language and disadvantage: The hidden process

Open Access•T C Jupp, Celia Roberts et al.•CHAPTER•Language and Social Identity•1983

General introduction In the 1950s and 1960s, many major urban areas of Britain which had been relatively monolingual and monocultural became multiethnic for the first time. A similar process of transformation occurred in many large industrialized cities of the world and for a similar reason: the need to fill unskilled, unsocial or poorly paid jobs which could not be filled locally. Generally, therefore, the jobs of the newly settled immigrants ha…

  • Introduction: Language and the communication of social identity

    Open Access•John J Gumperz, Jenny Cook‐gumperz et al.•CHAPTER•Language and Social Identity•1983

In this volume we present a series of case studies exploring situations of intergroup communication in modern industrial society. These studies are instances out of which we seek to develop interpretive sociolinguistic approaches to human interaction which account for the role that communicative phenomena play in the exercise of power and control and in the production and reproduction of social identity. Our basic premise is that social processes…

  • Interethnic communication in committee negotiations

    Open Access•John J Gumperz, Jenny Cook‐gumperz et al.•CHAPTER•Language and Social Identity•1983

It took even the Almighty six days to sort out the world's original problems and He was not a committee. The Economist , May 1980 Committee meetings with their delays, procrastinations, and inconsistencies have long been a favorite source of humor, but, like it or not, committees form an essential and in many ways crucial aspect of the process by which policy is made in industry and public affairs. In modern post-industrial urban societies, insti…

The socially defined character of the different areas of a nursery school are seen as the generated product of both the conventionalised expectations, and the accustomed, practiced expectations which are the product of pathways of usage and performance specifics which arise from the habitual usages of certain areas…
