  • Is Alcohol Consumption Pattern Dependent on Prenatal Sex‐Steroids? A Digit Ratio ( 2D: (4D ) Study Among University Students

Open Access•Barbara Ślawski, Anna Kasielska‐trojan et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Human Biology•2025

INTRODUCTION: There is evidence that alcohol consumption is influenced by prenatal sex steroids (as measured by digit ratio [2D:4D]). Here, we clarify the effect size of the relationship in a student (rather than a patient) population. METHODS: There were 258 (169 women) participants. Digit length was measured directly with calipers. Alcohol use was evaluated by the Polish version of Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT) and operation…

  • Is Preoperative Asymmetry a Predictor of Postoperative Asymmetry in Patients Undergoing Breast Reduction

Open Access•Tomasz Zawadzki, Bogusław Antoszewski et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2023

Plastic surgeons aim to achieve symmetry in breast surgeries, which is the main determinant of chest aesthetics. The aim of this study was to verify if preoperative breast asymmetry is a predictor of postoperative asymmetry in women undergoing breast reduction. In this prospective study, we enrolled 71 women (the mean age 37 years, SD 10 years) with breast hypertrophy who underwent reduction mammaplasty. We collected clinical data including age, …

  • Right–left digit ratios, a novel form of asymmetry: Patterns of instability in children and relationships to platelet counts and hospitalization in adults with Covid-19

    Open Access•Anna Kasielska‐trojan, Anna Kasielska-Trojan et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2022

High right minus left (R-L) asymmetry of digit ratios has been reported to be linked to hospitalization for COVID-19. Here we examined the developmental patterns of this novel form of asymmetry in children and further explored their relationships to platelet counts and hospitalization for COVID-19 in adult patients. We considered ratios calculated from four digits (2D, 3D, 4D, 5D) in: (i) a sample of healthy participants aged 2 years to 18 years …

  • The Influence of Faith and Religion on Family Interactions and Interest in Health Issues during the Covid-19 Pandemic—A Study among Polish Adolescents

    Open Access•Anna Kasielska‐trojan, Julian Dzierżak et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2022

Attending Catholic school and being a practicing believer influenced some aspects of faith and family relations during the pandemic, but in most aspects, they did not influence attitudes toward health issues. The results of the study highlight the need to secure, especially for non-believing adolescents, family support during the pandemic, while in believers faith may provide such support

  • Breast Fluctuating Asymmetry in Women with Macromastia/Gigantomastia

    Open Access•Anna Kasielska‐trojan, Tomasz Zawadzki et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2022

In women with different breast sizes, breast size correlates with FA calculated from breast volume and nipple location FAs. In women with macromastia and/or gigantomastia, breasts present higher FA than "normal" breasts. This observation may give a rationale for earlier and more frequent prophylactic breast imaging in women with macromastia and/or gigantomastia

  • When Body Art Goes Awry—Severe Systemic Allergic Reaction to Red Ink Tattoo Requiring Surgical Treatment

Open Access•Agata Szulia, Bogusław Antoszewski et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2022

The aim of this report is to present a case of a patient who developed unusual systemic hypersensitivity reaction to a red-pigmented tattoo and to discuss diagnostic difficulties in case of systemic reactions to tattoo ink. The patient reported erythroderma on his arms and chest accompanied by plaque elevation of red parts of his most recently performed forearm tattoo as his primary symptoms. His health condition entailed a prolonged topical and …

  • Odontological analysis of Polish children with unilateral cleft lip and palate

    Open Access•Piotr Sękowski, Piotr M Sękowski et al.•ARTICLE•Anthropological Review•2019

Tooth size, being the effect of interaction of genetic and prenatal factors, could be of importance in interpreting the multifactor causes of cleft lip/palate. Publications indicating decreased tooth parameters, no dental differences, or larger dimensions of teeth in cleft lip/palate patients. Researchers report mostly mesiodistal (MD) measurements of maxillary (affected) teeth. There is a lack of data for buccolingual (BL) diameters. Both MD and…

  • Do skin and hair pigmentation in prepubertal and early pubertal stages correlate with 2D: 4D

Open Access•A Sitek, ławomir M Kozieł et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Human Biology•2018

OBJECTIVES: In most human populations women are less pigmented than men. However, before puberty, boys tend to have lighter skin than girls. Previous research has shown that skin pigmentation in European women is negatively correlated with digit ratio (2D:4D). Therefore, it has been hypothesized that skin pigmentation in females is partially controlled by prenatal hormones. The aim of this study was to examine the correlation between 2D:4D and pi…

  • Over 4,500 years of trepanation in Poland: From the unknown to therapeutic advisability

    Open Access•W Lorkiewicz, Joanna Mietlińska-Sauter et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2018•Cited by: 1•References: 23

This paper discusses 6 trepanned skulls from central Poland, dating from the late Neolithic (3,000-2,800 BC) to early modern times (18th century AD). Four of them come from a small area in and around the town of Brześć Kujawski in Kujawy, a region of long-lasting and intense human settlement in Poland. The analysed skulls provide striking evidence for the long history of trepanation in this part of Europe. Three surgical techniques were used: saw…

  • Can Body Proportions Serve as a Predictor of Risk-Taking Behaviours in Women and Men?

    Open Access•Anna Kasielska‐trojan, Anna Kasielska-Trojan et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Biosocial Science•2017

The second to fourth digit ratio (2D:4D) is claimed to be a biomarker of prenatal sex steroids. This study compared 2D:4D and waist–hip ratio (WHR) in men and women with nose deformity caused by injuries suggesting risky behaviour with those of unaffected controls. This kind of facial trauma was accepted as an indicator of risk-taking behaviour. The study involved 100 patients (50 women aged 30.74±8.09 years and 50 men aged 30.98±10.86 years) who…

  • Tattooing and Body Piercing - What Motivates You To Do It

Open Access•Bogusław Antoszewski, A Sitek et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Social…•2010

Background: Body ornamentation is becoming more and more popular, especially among young people. Aims: To establish the sociodemographic characteristics of people with tattoos or body piercing and to analyze the motivations for body ornamentation. Methods: The questionnaire studies were undertaken in Lodz — one of the largest cities in Poland. The data was collected from a group of 968 people, 476 of whom had a piercing and 492 a permanent tattoo…
