Feasibility of the NCTSN breakthrough parenting curriculum
A randomized controlled trial of technology‐enhanced behavioral parent training
BACKGROUND: Early-onset (3-8 years old) disruptive behavior disorders (DBDs) have been linked to a range of psychosocial sequelae in adolescence and beyond, including delinquency, depression, and substance use. Given that low-income families are overrepresented in statistics on early-onset DBDs, prevention and early-intervention targeting this population is a public health imperative. The efficacy of Behavioral Parent Training (BPT) programs such…
Modeling dynamic processes with panel data
Many interventions are characterized by repeated observations on the same individuals (e.g., baseline, mid-intervention, two to three post-intervention observations), which offer the opportunity to consider differences in how individuals vary over time. Effective interventions may not be limited to changing means, but instead may also include changes to how variables affect each other over time. Continuous time models offer the opportunity to spe…

Parental Depressive Symptoms and Parenting
The association between positive parenting behaviors and children's coping is contingent on current levels of parents' depressive symptoms. Efforts to enhance children's coping skills should target both parental depressive symptoms and parenting skills

Positive Parenting of Young Adolescents by Male Cohabiting Partners
Fathers have often been ignored in the parenting literature. The current study focused on male cohabiting partners (MCPs) who can serve as “social stepfathers” and examined the association of coparent support and conflict with their positive parenting behavior (i.e., acceptance, firm control, and monitoring) of adolescents. Participants were 121 low-income urban Black cohabiting stepfamilies (mother, MCP, adolescent). The mother and MCP completed…
Structural Equation Modeling Approaches for Analyzing Partially Nested Data
Study designs involving clustering in some study arms, but not all study arms, are common in clinical treatment-outcome and educational settings. For instance, in a treatment arm, persons may be nested in therapy groups, whereas in a control arm there are no groups. Methodological approaches for handling such partially nested designs have recently been developed in a multilevel modeling framework (MLM-PN) and have proved very useful. We introduce…
The Relation of Harsh and Permissive Discipline with Child Disruptive Behaviors
Ready, Set, Go
Understanding of preadolescent sexuality is limited. To help fill this gap, we calculated frequencies, percentages, and confidence intervals for 1,096 preadolescents’ reports of sexual thoughts, intentions, and sexual behavior. Cochran-Armitage trend tests accounted for age effects. Findings show that 9-year-olds are readying for sexual activity, with sexual readiness increasing between ages of 9 and 12. Sexual thoughts increased with age ( p < .…
Predictors of Coparenting Relationship Quality in African American Single Mother Families
Nonmarital coparents, or adults who assist mothers with childrearing, play a significant role in the lives of African American single mothers and their children. Yet relatively little research has examined correlates of the quality of the coparenting relationship in these families. Using a broad ecological framework, the current study examined correlates of maternal-report of coparenting relationship quality in a sample of 242 low-income African …
Factors Associated with Parent–Child Communication About HIV/Aids in the United States and Kenya
Depressive symptoms as a link between barriers to care and sexual risk behavior of HIV-infected individuals living in non-urban areas
HIV-infected individuals living in non-urban areas have been proposed to be particularly vulnerable for sexual risk behavior because of barriers to adequate care. The current study examined the association of barriers to care and sexual risk behavior with a focus on depressive symptoms as a link between the two variables. One-hundred-and-one sexually active HIV-infected individuals living in non-urban areas in New England participated by completi…
Urban‐Rural Differences in Motivation to Control Prejudice Toward People With HIV/Aids
Context: HIV/AIDS is occurring with increasing frequency in rural areas of the United States, and people living with HIV/AIDS in rural communities report higher levels of perceived stigma than their more urban counterparts. The extent to which stigmatized individuals perceive stigma could be influenced, in part, by prevailing community attitudes. Differences between rural and more metropolitan community members' attitudes toward people with HIV/A…
Measurement of Stigma in People with HIV
Stigma associated with HIV infection can unfavorably impact the lives and behavior of people living with HIV/AIDS. The HIV Stigma Scale was designed to measure the perception of stigma by those who are HIV infected. Reanalysis of the psychometric properties of this scale was conducted in a new sample of 157 individuals living with HIV/AIDS in rural New England. This resulted in revision of the scale: shortening it from 40 to 32 items and retainin…

Maternal HIV/Aids and depressive symptoms among inner-city African American youth
This study was designed to examine interactions between psychosocial risk (i.e., maternal depressive symptoms) and protective (i.e., child coping skills and mother-child relationship quality) correlates of depressive symptoms among inner-city African American children of mothers with and without HIV/AIDS. Two primary hypotheses were tested: (a) whether these correlates interact differently in HIV-infected and noninfected samples and (b) whether c…
Self-Regulation and Conduct Problems Among Low-Income African American Youth From Single-Mother Homes
The present study examines perceived neighborhood context and gender as moderators of the relation between self-regulation and conduct problems among low-income African American youth (7 to 15 years old; 50% girls) from single-mother homes. Mother-child dyads (N = 277) provided ratings of self-regulation, neighborhood resources and risks, and aggression and other conduct problems. Analyses revealed a significant three-way interaction among self-r…

Stages of sexual readiness and six‐month stage progression among African American pre‐teens
We examined the range of sexual intentions and behaviors preceding sexual initiation among 211 African-American pre-teens assigned to the control arm of a longitudinal community-based intervention trial. Stage of sexual readiness was assessed using the stage of change construct from the Transtheoretical Model, and patterns of stage movement during a 6-month period were examined. Overall, 90% of participants were in precontemplation at baseline, w…
Sexual Intentions of Black Preadolescents
Risk and adaptive behaviors are markers of sexual intentions among black preadolescents. Prevention programs can use these behaviors to identify black youth who may be at high risk for early sexual initiation

Discrepancy between Mother and Child Perceptions of Their Relationship
Psychosocial Adjustment of African American Children in Single-Mother Families
Three models of risk were examined for 277 African American children from single-mother-headed homes: cumulative, additive, and indirect models. Risk factors were mother-reported community risks, inadequate income, maternal depressive symptoms, and inadequate parenting. Child-reported internalizing and externalizing difficulties served as dependent measures of adjustment. Whereas the cumulative risk model identified a subset of children within th…

Stress Generation in Intact Community Families
The family stress generation process was examined, as was the role of family stress generation in adolescent adjustment. Participants were mothers ( n = 119), fathers ( n = 96), and adolescents ( n = 119) from intact, community families. Assessments were conducted at two points during adolescence, separated by one year. Mother's initial depressive symptoms generated perceived stress in both her marital and mother-adolescent relationship a year la…
The role of family conflict and marital conflict in adolescent functioning
Parent-Adolescent Conflict
Adolescence has been portrayed as a time of storm and stress, and parent-adolescent conflict has been identified as a primary contribution to this state. At the present time there have been few studies addressing the issue of conflict between parents and adolescents. The purposes of the present study were to examine the perceptions of conflict among nonclinic mothers, fathers, and their early adolescent daughters, and to predict perceptions of pa…
Adolescents and Maternal Employment
Labor statistics show that mothers of adolescents are more likely to work than are those of children in any other age group, and, therefore, represent an important sample to address. The present study had two purposes. First, the effects of maternal employment on adolescent functioning were examined in a sample of 63 young adolescents. Results showed that maternal employment was not related to any of the areas assessed, suggesting that maternal e…

The role of paternal variables in divorced and married families
The predictability of adolescent adjustment, based on teacher reports, in divorced and married families was examined in relationship to four variables: paternal mood, spouse-ex-spouse relationship, father-adolescent relationship, and parental visitation. Analyses indicated that the father-adolescent relationship was predictive of adolescent functioning in divorced families, and the spousal relationship and paternal mood were similarly predictive …
Resilient adolescents and interparental conflict
Two groups of young adolescents, both experiencing high interparental conflict but differing in terms of cognitive competence, were examined for individual and family factors that might distinguish a resilient group. Adolescent self-esteem and relationship with the mother differentiated the two groups. A stress buffering model is proposed
Predicting alcohol and drug use in early adulthood
Unique and interactive internalizing and externalizing behavior problems in adolescence were examined in relationship to drug and alcohol use in young adulthood. Results indicated that higher externalizing scores in adolescence predicted more alcohol use in young adulthood for both males and females and also predicted more marijuana and hard drug use for males. Lower internalizing scores were found to predict more marijuana and hard drug use in y…
