  • Revisiting the evidence of the Arenal 1 site

Open Access•Karolyn L Buhring, Karolyn Buhring et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Island and Coastal…•2024•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 3

The Arenal 1 site in central southern Chile is renowned for its chicken DNA evidence suggesting pre-Columbian contacts with Polynesia. Debates around the chronology of the site and the lack of additional evidence supporting contact, gave origin to a new archaeological excavation focusing on refining the site's chronology and recovering further archaeological materials. The results appear to reconfirm a pre-Columbian date for this site; however, o…

During the Formative period by the Late-Holocene (ca. 3000–1500 BP), semi-sedentary and sedentary human occupations had emerged in the oases, salares, and riverine systems in the central depression (2400–1000 masl) of the Atacama Desert, northern Chile (19–25°S). This hyperarid core was marginally occupied during the post-Pleistocene and middle Holocene droughts. Settlement on these lower belts was accompanied by a rise in humidity, the introduct…

  • A Novel Child Burial from Tierra del Fuego

A Prieto, Susana Morano et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Island and Coastal…•2019•Citada por: 3•Referencias: 10

This paper reports the archaeological materials from a unique child burial recently discovered in Tierra del Fuego. Preliminary analyses are consistent with the idea that the burial belongs to the Selk’nam culture. Although the Selk’nam archaeological record is abundant, very little is known about their mortuary practices. In this well-preserved burial, the human remains were accompanied by an unusual set of grave goods, which have not been descr…

  • The ways of fish beyond the sea

Open Access•B Ballester Riesco, Benjamín Ballester et al.•ARTICLE•Anthropozoologica•2019•Citada por: 7•Referencias: 55

Along the Atacama Desert coast, fish has always been a staple food and by the Formative period (500 cal B.C.-700 cal A.D.) it had become a product in high demand by the inhabitants of the inland valleys, oases and ravines of the desert. In this paper we explore the technologies used in coastal fishing activities, the diverse species caught, and fish processing and preserving techniques. We further examine the circulation routes of the product thr…

• Hunter-gatherers, biogeographic barriers and the development of human settlement in Tierra del Fuego

Open Access•Flavia Morello, Luis Alberto Borrero et al.•ARTICLE•Antiquity•2012•Citada por: 15•Referencias: 12

Tierra del Fuego represents the southernmost limit of human settlement in the Americas. While people may have started to arrive there around 10 500 BP, when it was still connected to the mainland, the main wave of occupation occurred 5000 years later, by which time it had become an island. The co-existence in the area of maritime hunter-gatherers (in canoes) with previous terrestrial occupants pre-echoes the culturally distinctive groups encounte…
