Out of sight, out of mind: Activism and the scalar politics of nuclear waste governance in Switzerland
Nuclear waste disposal is a technological project that produce uneven geographies—a longstanding concern of environmental justice scholars and activists. This article explores the scalar politics of nuclear waste governance in Switzerland by focusing on the activist group LoTi (Lägern ohne Tiefenlager) in the region recently proposed as the site of a deep geological nuclear waste repository (Nördlich Lägern). Drawing on geographical scholarship o…
A Reparative Paradigm for Thinking With Disasters
The field of disaster studies remains largely committed to a modernist spatio‐temporal imaginary that persistently emphasises the singularity of a given disaster and often fails to account for the broader set of affairs in which disasters are situated and shaped, in turn leading to circumspect, uninventive and ineffective policy outcomes. In light of these trends, we argue for a paradigm shift in disaster research. In this commentary, we aim to a…
From rigidity traps towards reparative disaster governance and management
Nuclear strata: Enacting clay for the deep geological disposal of nuclear waste in Switzerland
For the realization of a deep geological repository, geoscientists have investigated various geological formations and assessed their suitability as host rocks for the long-term disposal of high-level nuclear waste. A fundamental epistemological uncertainty has characterized this geoscientific exploration of the subterranean, evolving not only as a scientific-technical challenge in deep geological disposal projects but also as a sociopolitical on…
The emperor, the lion and the peacock: Monuments and contested state sovereignty in contemporary Ethiopia
As a first project launched after his nomination as Ethiopia’s new prime minister in 2018, Abiy Ahmed renovated the Imperial Palace in Ethiopia’s political center, Addis Ababa to turn it into a heritage site of significance for nation-state building. This project was widely interpreted as a sign for the end of authoritarian rule and political tensions in the country. In this paper, we scrutinize the monumentalization inside the palace as an assem…
Cartographic Enclosure and Urban Cadastral Mapping in the Ethiopian Somali Capital
Cadastral maps, which are designed as comprehensive systems for recording and surveying land relations, are critical for making society legible and governable. However, critical cartography scholarship suggests that exercising power through maps is not straightforward: It is dependent on how maps are created and used during the mapping process. This paper examines cadastral mapping in Jigjiga, a multi-ethnic city in the Ethiopian Somali frontier …
Energy futures as societal futures: Co-evolutionary scenarios linking futures of society and decarbonized energy systems in Switzerland 2050
There is consensus that the global energy system will have to change substantially in the next decades to reach carbon neutrality. However, there are many visions of future energy systems and possible pathways leading to the corresponding futures. Sciences build scenarios describing possible low-carbon energy futures based primarily on techno-economic models, partially reducing uncertainty for informed policies. However, social scientists have ar…
Deep Time Horizons: Vincent Ialenti’s Deep Time Reckoning: How Future Thinking Can Help Earth Now. Cambridge, MA: MIT Press
Deep Time Reckoning highlights that humanity must find new ways to inspire and structure temporal thinking when dealing with the contemporary crisis of the 'Anthropocene'
Unsettling sovereignty: Violence, myths and the politics of history in the Ethiopian Somali metropolis
An increasingly consolidated anthropological scholarship has moved from a legal notion of sovereignty towards an analysis of its violent enactment. Yet, it has paid insufficient attention to the ways in which the idea of sovereignty forms and operates in localized political struggles. Taking seriously Bonilla’s (2017) call for the “unsettling” of sovereignty, this article scrutinizes how ideas of legitimate rule have formed around myths of violen…
State territorialization at the margins: Property formalization and paperwork in the Ethiopian Somali frontier
Property formalization is integral part of state territorialization. • Paperwork mediates the inscription of law in property landscapes. • Property landscapes entangle state authority symbolically and materially
Ontology and integrative research on Global Environmental Change: Towards a critical GEC science
Decentralization and the Local Developmental State: Peasant Mobilization in Oromiya, Ethiopia
This article explores the politics of decentralization and state-peasant encounters in rural Oromiya, Ethiopia. Breaking with a centralized past, the incumbent government of the Ethiopian People's Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF) committed itself to a decentralization policy in the early 1990s and has since then created a number of new sites for state-citizen interactions. In the context of electoral authoritarianism, however, decentralizat…
Re-spacing African drylands: Territorialization, sedentarization and indigenous commodification in the Ethiopian pastoral frontier
This paper traces the re-spacing of pastoral drylands in Africa. We argue that rendering pastoral resources legible and profitable occurs both within and beyond the state. Through a multi-sited case study from Ethiopia's Somali region, we excavate different mechanisms of sedentarization, whereby processes of state territorialization and indigenous commodification become mutually entangled. Sedentarization is not imposed by the state or corporate …
Decentralization to the household: Expansion and limits of state power in rural Oromiya
This article sheds light on the impacts and dynamics of the latest decentralization phase in Ethiopia, which seeks to professionalize and democratize local government. Based on recent field research in Oromiya Region, we draw attention to the paradoxes inherent in the top-down decentralization of public administration within an authoritarian one-party state. On the one hand, decentralization in Oromiya has empowered kebele administrations and fac…
