  • The Truth of History in the Graffiti on the Fresco of St. Sophia of Kyiv

    Open Access•Nadiya Nikitenko•ARTICLE•NaUKMA Research Papers History…•2023

The article, in the context of the author’s proposal of new dating of St. Sophia of Kyiv to the years of 1011–1018, focuses on the conceptual problem of the apogee of the development of ancient Rus-Ukraine. It is argued that this historical phenomenon is characteristic of the era of Volodymyr the Great, rather than Yaroslav the Wise, which was only a “weakened copy” of his father’s reign. To support this argument, the article analyzes the oldest …

They are singled out as separate compositions, “inserted” in the center of large narrative scenes of the religious and se…

St. Sophia of Kyiv, built in 1011‒1018 at the turn of the reigns of Volodymyr the Great and Yaroslav the Wise, has preserved a large number of unique secular frescoes. A triumphal fresco cycle is unfolding in the two stair towers which, according to the Byzantine tradition, glorifies its customer. The frescoes tell about a dynastic marri…
