  • Change and continuity in the reporting of science and technology

Open Access•Abigail Clayton, Micheline Hancock-Beaulieu et al.•ARTICLE•Public Understanding of Science•1993

Changes in the scientific material selected for presentation in The Times and the Guardian are examined by comparing two periods—the mid-1970s and the end of the 1980s. The attitudes of the two newspapers to this material are also looked at via a content analysis. The longer-term trends suggested by this study are compared with the way the two newspapers handled a specific science-related event—the accident at Chernobyl—during this period. The re…

  • Astronomy and geology, terrible muses! Tennyson and 19th-century science

Open Access•A J Meadows, Desmond George King-Hele•ARTICLE•Notes and Records the Royal…•1992

Shortly after Tennyson’s death in 1892, Thomas Huxley wrote to Sir Michael Foster, then Secretary of the Royal Society, asking Was not Tennyson a Fellow of the Royal Society? If so, should not the President and Council take some notice of his death and delegate some one to the funeral to represent them? Very likely you have thought of it already. He was the only modern poet, in fact the only poet since the time of Lucretius, who has taken the tro…

A great deal has been written concerning the impact of new technology on traditional publishing processes, leading to new forms of electronic publishing. Much less thought has been given to the effects of computerization on archival material. Yet, increasingly, records previously held in hard-copy form are being stored and handled electronically; this is particularly true of information in the scientific/technological/industrial area. In coming y…

The flow of information is an essential tool for all scientific research and is here examined within and between sciences. Examples are quoted of diffusion across scientific disciplines and technologies, and how science in new papers and in general scientific journals help scientists. Informal channel of communication are discussed and interdisciplinary contacts during conferences are considered. The change of research field by individual scienti…
