Runaway Enslaved Families in Senegal: Mothers, Children, Resistance, and Vulnerabilities, 1857–1903
Slavery, the End of Slavery, and the Intensification of Work in the French Soudan, 1883–1912
This article posits a strong correlation between episodes of regionally specific economic growth and the intensification of work to meet increased demand. The arrival of the French conquest armies in Bamako in 1883 stimulated the market for grain to feed the soldiers and the crowd of those supporting them. The market for grain had long predated the arrival of the French to support the desert side trade with the pastoralists of the sahel and had s…
Viral video ‘blood chocolate’ activism, millennial anti-trafficking, and the neoliberal resurgence of shaming
Viral videos offer contemporary activists a nimble, provocative tool with which to disseminate humanitarian messages. This article historicizes anti-trafficking video media that imagine a new potential with which to alter behavioral norms around cocoa and chocolate. The article engages theories and approaches to historical and contemporary modalities of naming and shaming, spanning three centuries to the present day. Videos are examined for style…
Changing Minds: How Aging Affects Language and How Language Affects Aging
Why language ability remains resilient and how it shapes our lives. -- Provided by publisher. We acquire our native language, seemingly without effort, in infancy and early childhood. Language is our constant companion throughout our lifetime, even as we age. Indeed, compared with other aspects of cognition, language seems to be fairly resilient through the process of aging. In Changing Minds, Roger Kreuz and Richard Roberts examine how aging aff…

Slavery in the History of Muslim Black Africa
In African Muslim societies domestic slavery was a deeply entrenched institution, accepted as a matter of course by African believers and Muslim lawyers. This study, first published by Hurst in 1970, has been extensively revised, with a new introduction and an extra chapter on slavery taken from the work, Sahara and Sudan. It discusses domestic slavery in the context of the religious, social and economic conditions of Islamic societies, the statu…

History and Memory: The Power of Statist Narratives
The four articles assembled here were first presented at a single panel at the 43rd Annual Meeting of the African Studies Association in Nashville in November 2000. This panel, one of several at the meeting concerned with various aspects of history and memory, was specifically interested in the power of the state to generate and to suppress historical narratives. This interest in history and memory is not new to the methodological and epistemolog…

The Possibilities of Precolonial West African History
The study of the precolonial era has been a staple part of West African history since its beginning as an academic discipline more than forty years ago. Because of its traditions of empires and states, the West African political narrative conformed easily to the wellestablished forms of historical narrative most common to the discipline of history at the time. Many practitioners of West African history also brought to their study a sense of polit…

Women's Work and Women's Property: Household Social Relations in the Maraka Textile Industry of the Nineteenth Century
A history of the Maraka textile industry provides a glimpse into the fitful and uneven social and economic changes taking place during the nineteenth century in the area of the Western Sudan that is now part of Mali. Although the major historical events of this period are well understood, historians know very little about the social and economic history of the West African interior. Exactly how the abolition of the Atlantic slave trade, renewed I…

New optical and radiocarbon dates from Ngarrabullgan Cave, a Pleistocene archaeological site in Australia: Implications for the comparability of time clocks and for the human colonization of Australia
The human settlement of Australia falls into that period where dating is hard because it is near or beyond the reliable limit of radiocarbon study; instead a range of luminescence methods are being turned to (such as thermoluminescence at Jinmium: December 1996 ANTIQUITY). Ngarrabullgan Cave, a rock-shelter in Queensland, now offers a good suite of radiocarbon determinations which match well a pair of optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dates…
The Emergence of a Grain Market in Bamako, 1883-1908

Law, Colonialism and Conflicts over Property in Sub-Saharan Africa
In one of classic studies of law colonial Africa, Max Gluckman remarked that Lozi, like all Africans, appear to be very litigious. Almost every Lozi of middle age can recount dispute after dispute which he has been involved.2 Gluckman's study of Barotse, based on fieldwork carried out 1940s, was concerned above all with demonstrating logical paths of ruleoriented decision making which Barotse chiefs followed resolving disputes. He attributed Lozi…
The Resurgence of Pawning in French West Africa during the Depression of the 1930s
The Depression of the 1930s made itself felt in Africa in 1931 and 1932 with a sharp drop in commodity prices, which threatened the ability of many Africans to sustain and reproduce themselves. It also threatened colonial governments, which saw thin resources strained. Faced with a dramatic decline in revenues, the response of the French regime in West Africa was to tighten tax collection and cut back on staff and services.l This, in turn, placed…

Modes of Production in Africa: The Precolonial Era
What form does social inequality take without classes? How does the ecology of an area, in particular the Zaire basin, interact with social organization? What forms of production existed in different areas? What were the effects of mercantile capitalism on tribal production? The End of Slavery in Africa
Law in Colonial Africa
Law in colonial Africa was a cultural project that lay at the heart of efforts by Europeans and Africans to channel social change. Studying law yields fresh insights into the meaning of colonialism to those Africans who were empowered by it and those who struggled against it. The contributors in this volume use different approaches and employ different sources to investigate the interaction between law and social history. This book simultaneously…
